When dinner is a stir-fry with rice ... - Page 2

Our stirfries don't even have rice and they definitely fill us up!

Ton's of veg, lots of mushrooms for bulk and flavor, protein (usually shrimp or chicken, or left over steak) cooked in fat, and tossed in a delicious sauce. Mmmmmmmmmm. We do lots of one pot meals here though, chili, stews, soups etc.

To make the rolls, set up a shallow dish with warm water. It is easiest if you boil some water and pour in a little bit at a time. Prep all of your veggies and noodles ahead of time and have ready. Take the rice paper, soak for a few seconds in warm water until pliable, lay flat on cutting board and layer in your ingredients, and wrap like a burrito.

That is the meal. Dessert is usually fresh fruit of some type.

That is the meal. If DH wants more he can have bread. If your husband wants more, could you serve bread or a bagged green salad with cherry tomatoes? Or both?

when we have stir fry (served over rice) I dont plan anything else for dinner. We do always have fruit for somehting sweet for dessert unless I already have something else baked (pie, cake, muffins kinda thing)

I do make my stir fry with LOTS of veggies and usually little meat/chicken. So my family literally fills up on veggies and rice. I usually add in my stir frycolli, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, bell pepper, onion, carrots, sugar snap peas so I have a huge wok filled to the brim with stir fry.

I don't serve anything else with it. With all the veggies, protein (shrimp, beef or chicken) over brown rice is usually enough.

What about egg rolls or crab rangoon? Maybe hot and sour soup or egg drop soup?

Since hubby and I are losing weight, we are eating ALOT of stir frys.

We just do stir fry & rice, or sometimes noodles in place of the rice. But, my stir fry always has *LOTS* of veggies, and a good bit of oil from the frying along w/ various spices...

I serve fried rice (brown rice with peas, carrots, green onions, 2 eggs) as a side dish for salmon patties along with another vegetable. If we aren't having salmon patties, I pair the fried rice with another stir fry--beef with broccoli, beef with french cut green beans and noodles, stir fried vegetables with chicken, sweet and sour chicken or pork. Is it a matter of not being satisfied/full or a matter of wanting another taste/texture to round out the meal?

Yes, I think you (and another OP who mentioned culture) hit the nail on the head. It's about wanting another taste/texture.

Actually, DH is Japanese and we live in Japan. Here, dinner is normally 2-3 dishes, plus soup and rice. It's a lot of work though, making several dishes. I don't mind it sometimes, and I know it's healthy, but sometimes I just want to make a one-pot meal!

I was being a bit sneaky in my question, b/c really I was looking to find out whether Americans found "just" a stir-fry and rice a satisfying meal -- and the answer was a resounding yes. Will tell DH!

What other dishes would you prepare?

I usually just make the stir fry but if there are other dishes you might prepare with it I would be interested in seeing recipes.
