I cross-posted this in LWB. Thought you mamas might like to read this article. The US Consume Product Safety Commission has voted to ban all drop side cribs.

Took 'em long enough.

Well I'm glad we've got ours from when DD1 was an infant. Ours hasn't been recalled and the side that goes up and down uses metal hardware. I have absolutely no doubts about its safety. I'm barely 5 ft tall and there in no way I could put a baby in a non-drop side crib without actually dropping them into the crib.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that every death involved a drop-side crib with plastic hardware. Why ban the metal-hardware ones, too?

Now shorter parents are going to have to get on a stool to lay their baby down in a crib or get them back out (yeah, that's safe). People won't be able to lower height of the crib mattress when they should; they won't be able to reach down into it if they do, with the high side in the way.

I have a drop side too and can't imagine not being able to drop the side down.

We're short, too, so our crib has a side where the top quarter or third hinges down. The hinge is built so it can't pinch.

Yeah, that hinge kind is the kind I would want if I was using our crib. As is our hand me down drop side's great for cats to sleep in, as my Facebook page shows...

I forgot about the hinge kind. I've only seen the hinges on antique cribs. Do they still make those?
I guess they'll start again if they stopped.

this really sucks. i don't have a crib (not sure if we'll buy one or not) but this just sounds like a huge pita to me. i always had the drop side down so i could get the baby IN the crib!

good grief. how about banning something that impacts more people, like certain preservatives or chemicals. jeeze.

i wonder what that means for co-sleepers? i'm looking at buying a convertible one. can't tell from their site if they use metal hardware...

DDCC -- our crib has a hinge top, and I love it. It works perfectly for my 5'4" frame, and I find it a lot easier to use than a drop gate. It's not an antique -- it's a Baby's Dream crib that we got in 2007. There is absolutely no way I could reach down into a non-adjustable side crib.
