B/F while PReggo... words of wisdom?

I've got a very boob-centric 10 month old and just found out tonight I'm preggo. I take fenugreek to help my milk supply and I'm wondering if that's safe during pregnancy? I'll call somebody in the morning but as usual, I want to know NOW.

I had gastric bypass surgery 4 years ago and my body's weird - nutrition is hard for me and I worry that I'll be able to get enough for the belly baby, my baby, and me.

This was an "oops" so I'm woefully unprepared. Happy tho. Babies are good.

I wouldn't take fenugreek while pregnant: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milks...html#pregnancy

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and still breastfeeding my two year old. It's been a pretty ok experience so far, but I don't think I have very much milk at this point. Adventures in Tandem Nursing has a lot of info on nutrition while both pregnant and breastfeeding.

Congratulations on your "oops"

Thanks for the link! I'll skip my dose tonight and call around in the morning...

I'm nearly 34 weeks and my daughter is 25 months. We haven't had any problems. It's been much easier than I feared.

Congrats on your new little one, oops babies are blessings for sure!

My little guy was 12 months when I got pg with a surprise baby and while there were times of painful nursing and creepy crawly feeling of being touched out it was a neat experience and I am glad I got to live it.

I wouldn't take the fenugreek either as it can cause problems one of which if I remember right is contractions. (could be way off, my "baby" is now 2yo lol)

My milk dried up by probably 20wks but he just dry nursed and it wasn't that bad. Good luck!

Fenugreek is contraindicated during pregnancy, so I'd definitely stop taking it.

Adventures in Tandem Nursing by Hilary Flower and Mothering Your Nursing Toddler by Norma Jane Bumgarner have great info on pregnant nursing.

I'm tandem nursing through pregnancy for the fourth time, nursing through pregnancy for the fifth time.

I also recommend getting a copy of "Adventures in Tandem Nursing." It's very helpful.

I wish you all the best! I hope that you and your children have long, successful nursing relationships

The best I think anybody can give in regards to nursing while pregnant, is to take it one day at a time. If I think too far ahead about nursing my almost 3 year old right now, I feel really frantic at the prospect.

Thanks for the advice, ladies. I'm worried about quitting the fenugreek, my supply gets really low when I do, but I won't miss smelling like a plate of pancakes, that's for sure.

I'm trying not to think too far in advance, period... the thought of two in diapers.. ugh. I'll pretend the sudden urge to puke is morning sickness... LOL

This was me 15 years ago, only I had a 9mo baby when I found out I was 6 weeks pg with #2.

I was pretty stubborn and refused to give DD1 any kind of supplemental milk, and in retrospect that was a mistake. I did some things right- continuing to nurse on cue and offering her a variety of solids- but I should have also offered some kind of breastmilk substitute (formula or goat's milk- I was pretty "anti-cow's milk" in those days) in cups so she'd get the nutrition she needed when my supply tanked. I also should have been more open to using jarred baby food- I was stubborn about making all my own food for her, even when the smell of steaming carrots nauseated me.

Nursing while pg is about keeping up the nursing relationship, not about providing enough milk for the older baby.

My daughter is pretty in to food - anything we eat, she eats (within reason) so most of her nutrition comes from food I think, but she will not be comforted by anything but boob and mommy so I'd hate to have to take that away from her.

Im still nursing my 11 month old at 16 weeks. It's been much easier than I had expected. I had read all kinds of horror stories (drying up by 6 weeks, excruciating pain, etc) but none of that happened. I think my supply has decreased in the last week or two because DS has started to ask for water (well, it's also 100 degree outside these days...) and he's eating more. He does enjoy nursing still and doesnt get frustrated at the boob, so i guess even though the supply is down, there's still enough in there to keep him happy. My let down takes longer to happen, which is the only thing i find annoying right now. DS searches for the milk, has a couple sips and keeps pulling off and switching sides... Latching on is uncomfortable, but only for a few seconds. I just wish he didnt have to do it 20 times per feed.
Overall though, I would say it's going well and im happy we're still nursing. Just keep an eye on you LO's weight and hydration
