Iron Supplements for Anemia

I've been SO tired lately and wondering why- b/c I don't remember being this tired at 28 weeks with my other 2. Sure enough- got bloodwork results and I'm anemic. The MD told me to take ferrous sulfate 325 mg a day- when i went to whole foods they only had iron 50 mg. so i left and went to walgreens- there the bottles say iron 50mg is equal to ferrous sulfate 325 mg.??? and were full of red dye #2, and sodium lauryl sulfate!!! so i go back to whole foods and buy the lower dose iron- but it is a different form of iron- ferrous bisglycinate. Has anyone taken this during pregnancy and felt it helped with anemia? (I'm meeting with my midwife on Monday and will chat with her then, but thought I'd see if others had experience using this supplement for iron.) There is a lot of conflicting evidence online about iron supplements and even regarding which foods are high in iron.

As I have been put on an additional iron sup as well I will be very interested in the responses you get.
I have been given Ferrous Gluconate 324mg and am also not amused at all the other junk that seems to be in them. I would love a reliable replacement.

would Floradix not work? or MegaFoods Blood Builder? I am not a professional, but my daughter was anemic and I did a lot of research because she was having a hard time with ferrous sulfate

I didn't try this while I was pregnant, but they put my daughter on iron drops because she was anemic and the stuff just messed her up - she lost her appetite and she wouldn't poop. She was supposed to be taking 5 full droppers a day which is crazy for a little toddler. The floradix worked better. I just gave her 1/2 the serving amount (I am not sure exactly, it wasn't the adult dose)

From what I have read, it's better to take it through out the day, it gets absorbed better. "iron 50mg is equal to ferrous sulfate 325 mg" 50 mg is elemental iron, 325 is the iron, so you really only absorb the 50mg. If your doctor prescribed 325, I am going to bet that it's only 50 mg of elemental.

My daughter's drops were 75 mg in a serving, 15 mg elemental, so the 15 is what you really count in the daily allowance of what you need. There was confusion with the pharmacist who even asked me to call the doctor to double check to make sure she wasn't confusing the elemental iron value.

The difference is iron is how they are absorbed, which also in turn is how badly they cause stomach upset and constipation. "Ferrous bisglycinate is a novel form of iron that is easier to absorb, associated with fewer side effects, and less toxic than standard supplements like ferrous sulfate.

Ferrous sulfate is the cheapest and also the hardest on your stomach.
Honestly, it's best to try different kinds, because certain ones absorb better. Most people have a lot of difficulty with ferrous sulfate. If it's not being absorbed, then there is no point in taking it! You just poop it out - and it causes constipation until it's too much for your body.

I just looked it up to be sure - 325 mg ferrous sulfate is equal to 65 mg of elemental iron. I personally wouldn't try to match elemental iron levels with different iron types, because if some absorb better, then you can overdose.

Anyone, I could be totally wrong, but this is what I gleaned from my research and experience with my daughter.

I started taking the MegaFoods Blood Builder (18 mg, I believe) along with my 30 mg of iron in my prenatal... but still was anemic. On Monday, my OB just put me on prescription Ferralet... which is 90 mg. It also includes vitamin C, folic acid, and something else (drawing a blank...oh yeah, B12). I was surprised at how high the dose was--and I'm supposed to continue taking the 30 mg in my prenatal as well--but I was really really anemic.

I'm supposed to wait until 2 hours after a meal (preferably my largest) to take the supplement. Soda, some beans/legumes, dairy products, egg whites, spinach, and tannin in tea will all interfere with iron absorption.

I will say that it's been very gentle on my stomach and I haven't had the issues I had with other iron supplements I was prescribed during previous pregnancies. The pill is also quite small.

It's thevwaiting two hours from food that is so crazy making for me, I don't usually go 4 hours without starving to craziness currently!!!!! And nearly every meal and snack involves dairy for me right now, it's the only way I can get enough protien.

Well, I've been only taking 1 pill a day (27mg elemental iron) and already feel more energy. The pill I'm taking has b-12 and folic acid too- and i've been taking with OJ so there is some vit C in there to help with absorbing the iron. Seems to be working, even just based on my energy level the last 2 days taking it.
