basil and the squash that is eating the garden.

I have butternut squash planted - and they are starting to take up HUGE amount of space. They have invaded the lettuce and basil.

I am worried about the basil - the squash leaves are crowding it a bit and making it shady. I think they like a lot of sun.

Should I:

a) try to transplant the basil somewhere squash free

b) try basil in a new spot from seed (or a store seedling if I can find one)

c). Ignore it and hope for the best. Maybe prune a few squash leaves,

I am in zone 4b (I think) if it matters

Can you train the squash to grow away from the basil?

I totally hear you. I planted honeydew and watermelon and louffa gourds, and they are HUUUUUGE! It's crowding everything, and growing up corn stalks and everything. (The little twisty vines even wrap themselves around any weed they can find.)

Next year, melons, pumpkins, gourds, etc are getting their own garden!!!

My Grandpa likes to tell me about how his family (Italian) used to grow squash on the same trellises/beams that they grew grapes on - sounds funny, which is why he tells me about it, but they did it with success. Maybe look into that!
