I love the idea of making a waldorf style doll for my son, but I'm a novice sewer and have zero experience with knitting or crocheting . He has 2 vintage cabbage patch dolls but they don't sit up well and he doesn't seem interested in the them because he can't really "play" with them. He keeps asking for a new baby doll, and yesterday cried for a pink plastic baby that he saw at Ross. I would have bought it but it was just too poorly made. So anyways, I'm not sure whether I should go for something like this Rosy Cheeks Doll
, a nikki, a blanket doll (he likes to sooth himself by rubbing corners of blankets), or even a haba doll. Any suggestions? It would be great if whatever doll I buy / make will sit on its own, or even stand. I'm due with our 2nd in January so I think now is the perfect time for a new dolly. Please help!

I think making Waldorf dolls is a very satisfying endeavor. You can make one with very limited sewing skills or buy one ready made. Check on Etsy for a wide variety or ready made ones. Here is a link to a kit for one that can sit from Magic Cabin, also call Sweet Cheeks-
http://www.magiccabin.com/product.as...ype=&pcode=171
The Sweet Cheeks doll you linked to is a nice doll and I have heard a lot of good things about them- for starters, they are machine washable in a lingerie bag which I think is important for a child your son's age. I'm not a fan of polyester fibers, but they do have an upside and this is one advantage.
There are other dolls you can make, besides the wool/cotton Waldorf doll, too but the sitting up function you are looking for will limit your choices.
Personally, I think every child should be able to choose their own companion and I feel a bit sad that your son fell in love with a doll he couldn't have. But I understand your reasoning.

It made me sad too that he wanted the doll so bad and couldn't have it, but he calmed down quick and I took him to 2 other stores searching for one. He really wants a brother baby, not a sister and of course no stores seem to carry any.
Do you know anything about the weir doll kits? I've created an order a couple times but haven't been able to go through with it. I'm thinking I'd be better off making a knot type doll first for the baby, since I've read the head is hard to master, and I need all the practice I can get. I'll do some surfing today with my son and look for a ready made doll and hopefully we find one today. I'd like to keep it under $30 so this might be a little hard.

What about a pocket pal? http://dancingraindolls.com/pocket_pal_doll_kit.html
you can get a presewn body and a premade doll head. This is really the size my little ones prefer- I have made them the larger baby dolls and it is still the pocket pal that they love. They don't sit up on thier own though- and I really think you will have to go plastic to make them stand.
My DN loves her cabbage patch newborn baby doll.
