Hi, I'm new and have a son with VUR

Hi Mommies,
I'm a NJ mom of 2 boys (11m and 4 years). I'm staying home with them and raise them as green and natural as I can.
Very excited to be part of this wonderful community!!!
I found this forum while researching everything I could find about VUR (aka kidney reflux)
Our younger son had a UTI when he was 7 weeks old. We did the VCUG and it came back with VUR on left side stage II.
We refused giving him the antibiotic prophylaxis and took the wait-and-see approach. I'm breastfeeding and took herbs that promote bladder and kidney health, and we also are giving him a blend of tissue salt for UT health daily, plus probiotics.
Every time he ran the slightest temperature I checked his urine (must have been around 8 times or so in 9 months) and it always came back negative.
I did start getting a bit worried though because he does run temperatures fairly often (very short though and it doesn't affect his mood/behavior at all) - on the other hand does he have an older brother who brings back all sorts of things from school.
The last incident happened 3 weeks ago: high temp (over 103) which brought us to the ER. Urine came back negative, but his WBC was over 31.000! No other symptom. They shamed us into one dose of IV antibiotics (fear tactic - what if it was a bacterial infection in the blood...) and sent us home. I tripled his dose of probiotics after that for 2 weeks.

The next day the WBC went down to 24.000 and 9 days later it was 17.000
Ped wanted to check urine again to make sure it wasn't a "silent UTI" (anyone heard of something like that?)
So I went and took the urine sample myself - forgot to wash hands with everything going on - and had to wait about a half hour before he peed in the container (no sac). When they dipped it it showed positive for UTI and I was shocked! (Later, the culture showed there were steptococcos, which is typically found on the skin as far as I know?)

Next day we went to our second ped who examined another urine sample that we had taken the next morning at home with clean hands and urine sac. He looked at the urine twice under the microscope and dipped it but couldn't find a single sign of a UTI!

So that's that. But with all the uncertainty we did agree to repeat the VCUG today... and it showed that the reflux is now present at both sides!!!

We couldn't believe it.
Did anybody out there have a similar experience?
Is it possible that the reflux on the healthy side was always there but just didn't show due to the young age that the test was performed at?
We didn't get the final report yet, but it looks like the reflux is still stage II on the one side and possibly a II on the other side, too.

Anybody out there in the same situation?
How is your child?
Our son seems to be so happy and looks so healthy. Hard to imagine that something is seriously wrong with him.

How long on average before they outgrow this?

Any advice/help/support is soooo appreciated!

Thank you mommies!
