6mth old gets VERY rambunctious when tired?

Its really hard to wind down my baby when he's tired. Instead of seeming sleepy and gettin quiet he gets super rambunctious wanting to knaw on any piece of fabric or chew toy, climbing on everything and crawling around (he started crawling about a week ago). He even bangs his head a bit on the floor of if I try to put him in his crib he climbs the rails or tries to eat them. LOL! It's kinda funny to put in writing but I feel so bad for him. Right now I wear him down in his ergo carrier or I'll just sing and rock in his chair. But even when I'm singing or rocking in the chair he jumps up and down or pulls at my clothes/hair. I'm just staring NCSS so I posted on the NCSS thread but wondered if any other mama's had similiar experience and can help. TIA.

Are you catching his tired cues (yawning, eye rubbing, etc) right when they start? It could be that too much time is lapsing and he gets his second wind. I know that happens to my LO. If I wait too long or we are in the middle of something and I can't get him up to bed right away, he gets wired up again for up to an hour or more and then quickly comes crashing down by crying until I can quickly change his diaper for the night and get him into bed to nurse to sleep.

Like the pp, if I miss DD's cues then she gets REALLY playful and flails about and takes way longer to fall asleep.

DD STILL does this at 2 yo - she doesn't wind down if she gets tired, she gets more and more hyper.

Sounds just like my son. He seems to get more and more wound up as he gets tired. I think he just has trouble changing "states" as he has a ton of trouble waking up too.

Same with my 2.5 year old son.

When a child is over tired the body releases adrenaline. This is what causes that "second wind" or hyperactivity. That's why it's important to catch those early cues so you can get her to sleep before the adrenaline release.

Yup, my 2.5 year old does this too. She'll be screaming happy/crazy, settles in to nurse and bam, asleep. Doesn't take long to get her to sleep though, just need to lay down with her in bed and nurse her.
