Vaccines while on Nasonex?

Hi everyone. Does anyone know about the effects of getting immunizations, or point me to a place that does, when you are on nasal steroids? My 4 yo ds was just perscribed Nasonex to try and get ride of his inner ear fluid by our ENT, he has thick fluid that's been there for a while and led to his one and only ear infection back in April. But now it's still there and is impacting his speech which means it could have been there a while now. Anyways, before tubes she wants to try Nasonex so after a few opinions and thought I'm ok with it. But I have him scheduled to get 2 vaxes on Monday (we are on a very delayed schedule) and now I dont know what to do. I 'd like to get the steroid started but also want to finish out his part of these vaxes. (He's getting his 4th dtap and 4th polio) . So I have to choose one or the other. The insert says avoid getting vaxes while on nasonex because of possible neurological issues (wow) and low antibody response. So I won't do them even if the doc says ok at the same time and negate why I waited in the first place and I want the vax to count for something if I'm going thru with it.

so I dont' know if I should just wait a couple weeks after the vaxes for them to work thru his system and build good antibody numbers and then start the nasonex? I want this fluid gone for him but I also want to finish up what I started (no flames please!) Dh thinks do the vaxes Monday, then wait a couple weeks and start the Nasonex. Otherwise if I start the Nasonex she wants him on it for 6 weeks to see if the fluid can clear, and then I have to wait until it's out of his system to get the vax. That puts me into Sept. I kind of want this done and over with. Which should be first do you selective vaxers think?

thanks!!!!!

If you think he needs these particular vax then you will have to work around it, but it is not necessary to finish a vaccine series just to have a "matched set" so to speak. Multiple doeses are "catchalls" whose purpose is catch whomever was not made "immune" by the first dose.

I would not risk giving the vaccination prior to the drug; that's a pretty serious warning. Why risk such a serious reaction just to "get it over with"?

The reason(s) for the Nasonex - fluid in his ears, inflammation, speech difficulties - are causing problems for him NOW. The potential VPD are not. Vaxes can cause problems in children who are ill; whose immune systems are not functioning normally; who have inflammation; who are on other meds. Your doctor is suggesting tubes as the next step. You can't avoid the tubes without clearing up (with Nasonex) what is causing him problems NOW.

Get the Nasonex into his system; let it do it's work; let it leave his system; then vaccinate.

I agree totally. You need to deal with the problem at hand. A 4th dose is most likely not even needed. As PP said. It is done as a catch all to get the very small minority of kids that are not "immune" after the fist couple of doses.

ok, good points. Ok, then I'd be looking at a comfortable spacing say even if the nasonex didn't work and we had to do tubes at the beginning of Sept then I'd prob finish up the vaxes in Oct. My main thing is not really to get it over with, but to make sure I finish what I started and not have to wait until next summer to do it since I want it done before school is up and running. I know I will but I just don't like my kids getting vaxes during the sicker months. I feel like it taxes them too much. But I also don't want to chance him having to have antibiotics before I can get the fluid to drain. I guess if I can start the steroid working then that is better huh? In case he catches a summer cold? Am I thinking right? It seems strange to talk about being 4 and having one ear infection and having to have tubes (I always thought they were for the kids who had like 10 a year or something) but I do know i want the fluid gone, it's already been 2.5 months and the fluid is still there she said thick like honey. poor guy. so i want it gone for him. i guess that is more important then getting the vaxes right now. He would have gotten them a couple weeks ago but the power went out and they threw away their stock. ug.
And like was said, if there is some kind of inflammation going on with him to retain this fluid than vaxing would be compromising I suppose.
