2-part question about prefold covers

we've been using thirsties duo-wraps, xtra smalls, and bummis small and nb covers over prefolds since the beginning and are quite happy with them. she's out of the nb sizes, obviously, but still fits into everything else (but will probably outgrow them soon).

part one of my question is this: the covers smell of urine quite strongly after a couple uses. we used to wash them fairly infrequently, just air dry and re-use until soiled. now that she poops infrequently (and often in the potty) we almost never have poop on the covers, but i feel like i have to wash more frequently because of the not-so-fresh urine smell. i can't tell if this is just my perception because we do diaper laundry so much less often than before after finally adding a couple extra dozen prefolds to our stash.

do you think there could be a problem with our wash? the diapers themselves never have any smell after being used (with the exception of the first diaper change of the day) and our wash routine is very basic. or is this just an older baby thing to have stronger smelling urine (ours is 5 mnths and ebf'd).

the second part is: if i just need to get more covers to keep up with our less frequent laundry, what should i get? i like the bummis, but i got them second-hand and don't know about buying a whole new range in medium and then in large. i really like the thirsties duo-wrap 1 (so pretty, and very flexible and comfy) but we're already on the largest setting, and they're supposed to last to 18 lbs. i really don't see that happening, since we're only at 13lbs... it must be something about her build.

I don't know about the urine smell but I have Thirsties duo wraps also. The size 1 didn't last to 18 pounds but I got size 2 and they are really big. She's 20 pounds and I think these will last for a long time.

Just so you know. There is a HUGE size difference in between bummis SWW medium and small. I am pretty sure they'd still fit my 3.5 year old.
Our Bummis classic in medium are not as big.

Don't know about the thirsties.

So, I'm not the only one using Thirsties duo size 1 on a little baby and wondering how long they'll still fit? We have them on the largest setting, have done since about 11lbs, and the are just fitting still with an infant prefold at about 12.5lb
I find the bsww and bummis superbrights in size sm are much more generous and will last much longer.
Can't help with the smell issue - we still get poop on the cover at least once a day, if not 2 or 3 times!

i never have smell issues with my motherease airflow covers. that's all i use so not sure if you are using similar pul type covers.
i often use mine back to back, but my lo has messy enough poops that i usually wash the covers every 2-3 days.

Forgot to mention...I bought regular Thirsties covers also in medium now and they are very generously sized plus I just love how thin they are and the colors.

If I find my covers need washing more frequently than my diapers I throw them in with any load of laundry I'm doing.

On the thirsties duo. I think it depends on where the 18lbs is on the kid. My tall skinny 24lbs 2 year old will just barely fit into a duo size 1 if she's in a trim diaper. We have the size 2 duos and the classic thirsties in med that we use all the time. I'm a big thirsties fan

First, have to comment on the duos - My daughter is 14lbs 5oz 24.5in and just barely fits in the Duo size 1's.

Second, just recently, I've noticed the pee smell starting after only one or two uses. I usually just throw them in with the laundry, every 2-3 days. We have 4 Thirsties, 2 Prowraps, and some fleece covers. I find if I rotate them, I don't really notice the smell after they air dry.

i'm glad i'm not the only one finding the duo wrap 1 quite small. well, not glad, but you know what i mean.

kristydi and nicole730, that's a good idea about just putting them in with any load. for some reason that never occured to me!

i think maybe i will get a couple extra covers to bulk out our rotation... but i don't think i'd get more duo wrap 1s... maybe thirsties mediums, or something else altogether. i do love those thirsties though... so does my husband. just something about the colours and the overall shape and feel make them the ones we reach for first.

it's funny vto read about the duo's- my 11lb 8-week old is still on the smallest setting... maybe she's long???

I usually air dried my covers but found if I put them in the dryer sometimes that seemed to help with the smell.

Don't get Bummis Large any time soon, they're enormous. The mediums will last a long time. I did get one large to use over a bulky night time diaper but my DD was long out of diapers before it came anywhere close to fitting her. She's 2.5 and I doubt it would even fit her now.
