Question about separation and the intact penis

My ds1 will soon be 8 and is not fully retractible. This doesn't really concern me, but about 9 or 10 months ago, I mistook what I believe was normal separation trauma for something wrong. He was red and complaining on and off for about a month that his penis was sore so I took him to the dr. She perscribed fucidin cream which seemed to help, but I noticed that after that, he had smegma for the first time in his life. He was mostly retractible at that point in time and would retract himself on his own in the tub, so I encouraged him to clean himself with a soft cloth and water when he did.

So, after a few weeks of that, he came to me after bath time to tell me that he couldn't push the skin back anymore and wanted to show me. Sure enough, part of his foreskin had readhered to his glans. I encouraged him to leave it alone.

Since then, he has gone through phases where he retracts, but then doesn't again. There seems to be a bit right at the tip that detaches and reattaches randomly. He messes with himself and occasionally he gets sore and I now know this is probably separation trauma.

I guess what I want to know, is this normal, this detaching and reattaching, or did I somehow cause this with the fucidin ointment?

Bumping for you - and I have no idea other than I don't think it's at all related to the medicine. I've heard that as boys grown sometimes the foreskin can be a bit tighter than before but I didn't know it could completely re-adhere. Maybe someone who knows can chime in.

Any time irritation happens a foreskin can go from retractable to not. Usually soap is the problem. Instead of having him rub with a wash cloth have him just rinse it under running water with his bare hand that way there is no risk of irritation from the cloth. Also make sure that if he does use any soap he rinses it really well with clear water before getting out of the bath.

It sounds like he may be making a sore by pulling on things. What I would do is have him put some bacatracin OTC on there when that happens so that when it heals it will do so without sticking back together again.

MCat, the time he had that little bit of smegma was the only time I encouraged him to wash it. Otherwise we/he (me when he was smaller) only ever washed it like a finger. This seems to be cyclic in nature. There are times that he retract completely and then times that the whole side seems to tightly readhere. Is this normal? Will it stop?
