best carrier for a plane trip to NYC?

DS is 9 months, I'm 4 months preggers, and totally out of shape. DH and I are debating what to do-- spend some money on transporting a stroller, buy a stroller when we get there, use the wrap (bali breeze) we have or buy a new carrier.

Opinions? Suggestions on a carrier?

You can get lightly used Ergos for around $80 If you're out of shape and it would be hard to carry a little one, I think that an ergo would work out well.
I think your wrap would work out fine though.

If you're really worried about not being able to carry baby... have your DH do it And if he can't, Babies R' Us sells umbrella strollers (they dont recline though) for about $20. You can also check NYC's craigslist before you go and see if there's a better stroller for cheap, and arrange to pick it up when you get there

have a great trip!

I fly with my Beco all the time and skip a stroller all together. I hauled it from one end of the Detroit airport to another with my diaper bag, a 2 yr old on my back, dvd player, and I'm 26 weeks pregnant. It was so easy! The diaper bag I overloaded was a far bigger issue for me than my 2 yr old on my back.

thanks! We've tried the ergo-- It's very uncomfy for DS-- but we also live in texas where it's super hot! DH is comfy carrying the wrap, but most likely he'll be shlepping all our stuff at the airport, so I'd like to be able to do some of it.

I just came back from a party where someone mentioned that they were able to take their stroller on the plane for free-- we might try that.

Umbrella strollers recline. You just, um, lower the handles. Works for this cheapskate who never had a reclining umbrella stroller.

The wrap should be great but just remember to use a poppable positioning such as simple cross carry because some airports make you take the baby out and carry them thru the metal detector thingy. Your shoes and baby's shoes come off. You don't wanna be fumbling around to get all that done without 1st popping baby back in the carrier.

I was afraid I'd have to take my dd out of the beco when flying for security, but in almost 2 years of using it, I have yet to take her out. The TSA staff looks at me a little funny and they pat it down, but that's it. They tell me not to take her out. I think they're looking at it going, "Oh my gosh, how on earth do you get a baby in that contraption?" And they're terrified I'll block the entire line trying to get her out and back in.

I suppose it varies. I have flown twice with my DD and have had to remove her from the carrier all but one time.

I've never had to take a wrap off when flying, but here's my trick that I think is the reason why. I put on a coordinating top that goes with my wrap and I pre-tie at home. Then I just pop baby in at the airport and to the security gate. Right before I'm about to go through (like a person or so before) I take baby on and leave the wrap on. The wrap looks like my outfit, so have never had to take it out (and we fly nationally and internationally). Then once through, I just put baby back on. Easy!

I keep hearing about this becco. It looks like the ergo, which my son didn't really care for. Is it much better?

I second the suggestion for a used Ergo. Or buy a cheap stroller when you get there. The issue at that age (for us), is that we also needed a diaper bag, so someone carried the babe in the Ergo, while the other carried the backpack diaper bag. To us, the stroller advantage comes when you get storage along with it (usually not with an umbrella stroller, though).

The Beco is similar to the Ergo, it's more a matter of which one fits better. There are many other similar kinds of carriers (soft structured carriers), but they all have slightly different features, body size/shape, straps and waistband designs, etc. I found the Ergo to be too thick/padded for my liking, especially for summer wearing.

Without knowing your DS and what he does when he's in the carrier, it's hard to know whether he'll have a different opinion about other carriers.. how is he "uncomfy" when he's in the Ergo, is it something about the fit or does he get too hot?

When are you making the trip? Is there a babywearing group (or even just another BWing mama) nearby that might allow you to try on some carriers before you go?

(LOL.. and off-topic, but I like D?, -6 months in your sig )

I tried to use a wrap on the airplane. It's horrible. Too much fabric + not enough space+ people who don't know you and wonder why you keep dropping this piece of fabric on their heads = a frustrating, and bad experience.

But, OFF the plane, I love Mai tais.

As someone who was on at least 10 flights, 7 of those travelling alone in DD's first year of life, I wouldn't take a stroller because I find it is a huge pain to take the baby and all the stuff out and fold it up at security then put it all back in and repeat when you get on the plane and off the plane... Wraps are also incredibly annoying to tie and untie (although in normal life I love wrapping!), I have gone through without having to untie but if it is a high security day, especially if you are flying in or out of NYC, you might need to unwrap. I bought an inexpensive pouch that works great and I love for easy in and out and no learning curve. Anything with ties is very annoying when you are waiting to get off the plane but want to wear the baby already, the squishiness of a plane and the low ceiling makes tying very difficult.

I'd use a ring sling myself, but I'm a ring sling kind-of-girl!
