Vomiting Thick Mucus

My 2 week old has been vomiting maybe once a day. Some days we go vomit-free. Others she will do it once and it will be a lot. My midwife says it's fine and as long as she is gaining weight, not to worry.

A couple times, she has brought up a really thick mucus. Coughing, gagging all the way. She seems really distraught and maybe even in pain when she does it. Arching her back and throwing her head back. Her little face is contorted. It is almost like she has it stuck in her nose (you can hear it with her breathing) and she is struggling to get it out.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this? It really freaks me out and I'm really concerned. I've read it can be reflux or GERD. Maybe I should cut dairy out of my diet?

TIA!

Cerys is only 3 days but also does this (without the arching head back though). She's really gassy too.

How are your LO's poops? Sleeping/feeding ok?

Everything else is normal - poops are normal and frequent. She eats very well and sleeps well, too. Gaining weight well, etc. Everything I can find (and my MW suggested) says that if it were "something" there wouldn't be any weight gain and she would have problems eating/keeping things down. She does have that one spit up, but it is only once a day, if that frequent. Certainly not at every feed.

Maybe I'm being paranoid? I had anxiety issues after DS was born and I'm having it this time, too, but much milder. I'm just so afraid something will be wrong or that something will happen to her.

She sounds like she's doing great. Their digestive systems are still so immature, some disturbance is going to happen.

The anxiety is so common, I'm dealing with it too. Big Hugs Mama

Thank you. Having a newborn is terrifying - even having done it before. We went on our first outing today and I practically had an anxiety attack.

Hugs back to you. We will get through this just fine.

DDCC -

Could it be allergies? Do you have any pets in the house? Maybe cutting out dairy would be a good place to start. Just a suggestion from a mom with a kiddo who has tons of allergies. DD vomited a lot as a baby. Her gag reflux was always so strong (I think because of pet and environmental allergies). Couple that with her food allergies and she was just a pukie baby. It doesn't sound like anything serious is going on, but I'd still recommend going with your gut on this and trying a few things before chalking it up to normal spit up.

Yes, I was thinking allergies. Mucus to me makes me think of a dairy allergy. I was going to cut it out, but DH doesn't think it is anything. My MW doesn't seem concerned either, since it is rare and DD is gaining and thriving otherwise. We do have a dog, too. If it happens again, I will cut dairy out and go from there. Thanks for chiming in.

This is my first baby, and I've never felt so clueless about "newborn things", but I just wanted to give you a big and hope you get something figured out!
