I have not read the whoe thread but I think a nice middle ground to start with would be the two of you learning and exercising better skill at hiring people if you cannot/do not want to do it yourself. There are some things that just work better for me to have someone else do. I used to be part owner in a bike shop where we had "do it yoursef classes" we always laughed at how much money we would make because people would b uy the stuff to di themselves and then pay us more to fix it when they realized they were in over their head. It is important to know your limits. also buying a lot of tools to do a job is not always cost effective even if the repair itsef is cheap and the tools an investment.

So thats where I would start. find a good repair shop for the car and build a relationship with them. find out who has free dignostics, who is cheapest, who is honest, who likes to run up a bill....etc. know this information before hand so when you need it you and your husband wil already be in agreement on where to take it. same with plumbing, yard work and other home repair.
