Let's talk sunburn...help!

Despite my best efforts to keep my kiddies in shade...they all (including myself) got fairly moderate sunburns yesterday.
We're not by any means uncomfortable, thank goodness they aren't that bad! Yet we all have rosey-rudolph noses and perfect bating suit outlines

My concern is that today we have a family reunion, joyfully at a park with a heavily shaded playground area
There will be games etc for the kids in direct sunlight.

My question is, what are my best measures of defense? besides the obvious of keeping them undercover as much as possible.

Guess there were far too many other threads I should have perused first!

aloe gel with lidocaine kept in refrigerator. That's my therapy of choice but I haven't really got burned in a long time. I try to swim after 4pm then I don't bother with sunscreens.
