What is involved with a fertility workup?

My OB/GYN said to give it another 6months and then we could talk about a fertility workup but I didn't ask what that means. We've been trying for 6months and I'm 35.

Hmm, the last I heard was that if you're 35 or older, your work up should be done after 6 cycles w/no pregnancy... but I could very well be mistaken on the age. It depends on what is going on; as Keria said, generally CD3 labs, ultrasound, HSG (hysterosalpingogram), and SA and/or labs for him. It really helps if you have several charts to take in - charting BBT @ a minimum, but helps w/cm etc.

On a side note, okay, a bit of a soapbox, I can not reiderate how important it is to go to the doctor with a WRITTEN list of the following: what you're taking (Rx, OTC, herbs, non-western treatments, etc.) AND THEIR DOSES, your fertility chart(s), a brief history of your issue (e.g. have had normal cycles since I started at age XX, averaging 29 days w/heavy cramps and flow pattern XYZ, or whatever), copies or what you recall of any similar tests/labs/imaging you've had done (or he's had done), A goal or expected outcome (I'm looking to get pregnant by any means possible, I'd like to get pregnant, but I'm not looking to use anything other than medication [no IUI/IVF/etc.], etc.), a list of questions you have (w/space for answers and a pen/pencil!), and a list of any specific medications, labs, or imaging studies that you would like to have preformed (which means you've gotta do your research ahead of time!). This sounds over-the-top, but we are CONSUMERS in our healthcare system, we CHOOSE our healthcare provider based on the SERVICES PROVIDED - we PAY them for what they do - if they're not doing what you'd like, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. :-) Ok, off my ...

I am with you Rainy!! My first OB/GYN was like this. Granted I was a little younger but she new I had PCOS and I only had 3 or 4 cycles a year. After the first 6 months she put me on metformin and then 4 months later she tried one small BC treatment. Granted it worked but it took us almost 18 months to get prego. If you have already been trying the old fashioned way for 6 months I think that is long enough to start getting help. This time I have a different doc and I am telling them DO SOMETHING NOW!!!!! Because if they don't I am going else where. Its not like you are an 18 year old trying to get pregnant and are mad you didnt concieve your first month. You know your ready and its YOUR choice. They should just be there to make the drugs are taking safely and correctly and to monitor your and yours health. THATS IT.

Ok I could go on to. sorry for this. Maybe you can just call and talk to the nurse and tell them you are ready now and see if they will let you come in for testing now.
