Budget creation advice?

I'm working on creating our budget and am looking for some great online templates, worksheets, budget calculators, etc.

Also, when you're working on your budget what are things that you wish you had known when you earlier or that work really well for you?

I'm just starting to really nail my budget down, and it has taken time. So my recommendation is to give yourself some time to really get to know your spending habits -- don't be in a rush, or too hard on yourself at first! Here's how I have done it:

I signed up at mint.com and categorized everything. This gave me the chance to look at our spending over the course of a few months very quickly. And being forced to categorize each transaction helped me immediately find things to cut out (like a bunch of "services" related to our credit cards, subscriptions to websites we'd forgotten about, etc). It helped me come to some hard realizations, too (like the fact that we needed to pull DD out of her childcare situation because it was too expensive).

To work on cashflow I use a dry erase calendar and write in our expenses each week so we can tell when big things will hit during which pay periods and (try to) avoid going broke those weeks.

Now I am working on an excel spreadsheet for our budget to guide us through the next 10 months. I may use the website pear budget to help us keep track, or maybe not.

good luck!

You can also search google docs for lots of budgeting templates or check register type templates. I love Mint.com. Love how it collates all my financial accounts into one place and gives me a great overall picture of what I'm spending where. There's even a "trends" section with charts and graphs and a "ways to save" section that alerts you to high interest savings accounts or credit cards that have better rates than yours.

Thanks for the link to mint.com. It seems to be just what we're looking for. I hope I can get DH agree to link to it. (He likes to do online payments, but doesn't like websites to have access to information about our accounts.)

I use budgetsimple.com. You don't have to give any personal info beyond an e-mail address. You have to enter everything yourself, but it's simple to do.

For me the easiest way to get started was to log in to my bank account, go back 3-4 months and export everything to a spreadsheet. (Well I copy and paste). Then I started dragging stuff around to group like items together, and based my categories off that. This also helped me realize that we were spending way too much in some areas. (eating out!) It's also how I determined how much was actually needed. Like I took the average of what we spent on gas for 3-4 months. THEN I started looking for templates. I never found any free ones that jived with me so I created my own spreadsheet. (I get paid twice a month, so I had 2 worksheets) Now I use Mvelopes, which has definitely paid for itself in helping me get things under control.

If you have microsoft excel 2007, they have a TON of budget spreadsheet templates to start with.

I found this on Money Saving Mom:

Also, check out The Simple Dollar blog, and sometimes Wise Bread has good articles, but they are pretty hit and miss.
