We were on track until... A potty learning disaster story

So we went out of town for 2 nights and I thought, this is a good time to see if we can transition DD to the big potty and finally get rid of the little training potty she uses.

DH never leaves the toilet seat up. I don't know why, but he just doesn't.

Except this weekend.

So DH leaves the hotel on an errand and I'm watching DD.

"I have to go potty."

"Okay, you know what to do. Go ahead." (And I am so proud of her at that moment. She's doing so well with all the potty stuff.)

Next thing I know, poor kid has fallen in the toilet, is completely soaked and sobbing for mommy.

I get her cleaned up and explain what happened. She then attempts to go potty again but won't sit on it all the way (b/c she's terrified of the toilet now) and so hoses the bathroom floor as well as her legs.

Yet she is happy about using the potty.

I mop the floor with the remaining bath towels, give her another bath and send DH a blistering text.

I was so so close to having that stinking little potty gone. I really would like to know what possessed DH.

Ack! I feel you. We were doing great on big potties until we ran into those ones that flush themselves. LOUDLY. And I guess they don't detect little people well b/c they tend to flush while LO is sitting and scare the bejeezus out of her.

So she does ok at home but in public restrooms, she'll say she has to go but then freaks out and jumps down. Then I worry she's going to pee her pants in the middle of the library....

Well, they'll get past this setback eventually.. fingers crossed

I HATE those automatic flushing toilets for this reason! My friend's trick for those is to keep post it notes in her purse and put one over the sensor while the little kid is going potty, or cover it with your hand in a pinch!

I don't have any useful information, however DD has managed to fall in the toilet even using a potty seat on the toilet.. I'm still not entirely sure how she's managed that. Normally after 2 or 3 days of me escorting her to the bathroom to "spot" her, she is okay again.

We have the same problem with automatic flushing toilets, DD will not use the restroom in public restrooms if they have automatic flushing toilets.. We've unfortunately had more than one accident because of them.

Your poor DD, that must have been a very scary experience for her

I would get the little toilet seat that goes on top of the adult one for her. We actually never used a potty for ds, just that seat and a stool. Look for one that is cushioned, the hard plastic ones leave marks on their skin. Explain to her that this toilet seat will help turn the toilet into a potty chair for her and that she won't fall in on it. Also, I would go in every time with her for a little while to make sure she sets it up right and be there if she does somehow manage to fall in.

OP - DS has fallen in because of this, too! I tried to make it fun/ny. Then again, I was right there so I quickly fished him out. Making fun of falling in quickly backfired, as the next (few) time(s), he thought it was funny to lower himself into the toilet until his butt touched the water. "I take a bath!"

The "eye" set us back a bit, too. I cover it with toilet paper. Whenever we go into a public toilet, DS looks for the eye. I now have him convinced that I control it. (After he finishes, I remove the paper and count to 3. *I* tell it when to flush.)

As long as the seat is down, DD is fine. She's as tall & big as a 4-5 year old at 2.5. Our toilet is a little high for her so she'll need a step stool. I have the insert but she hasn't embraced it.

The hotel toilet was perfect for her; perfect height so she could do it all by herself.

And then DH left the toilet seat up. Grrrr.

Oddly, we haven't had issues with the auto toilets. We don't seem to have many of them in the area too which helps.
