Should I switch doctors?

I am wondering if you would switch doctors. I started out with our family doctor and he was fine with us not vaccinating. But he had limited office hours and it was getting frustrating to call on a Monday for an appointment and not get in until Thursday or call Wed and not get in until the next Monday. So I switched.

The new doctor at first acted like she was ok with no vaccinating, but then, at the last visit, said she needs complete records for ALL of my children. I have 5 children. The oldest is almost 16 yrs old. Outside of the oldest, none of the children have had anything worth mentioning medically. All those medical records would mean printing of...oh, 47 years worth of records if you add all my childrens ages together. Why would anyone want that? Plus, she gave me a copy of Dr Sears alternative vaccination schedule. Ok, I felt that schedule was a crock and have no intention of following it. She says we will discuss it next visit.

I cannot help but feel, when she wants that much detail on my children's lives and history, that she is impending on my privacy. I would understand if she wanted to information on something specific or any current health problems. But since we are talking perfectly healthy children with normal growth charts and a record that will simply be full of stuff like sinus infection here and strep there (things every single child has at some point in their lives) there is no point. I did provide her with shot records and growth charts for the children, sent over directly from the doctors offices. If I have to provide anything else, it will involve me having to pay large amounts of money to pull records from archives. We have been with that family doctor exclusively since 2004 so every other doctor we have ever seen as archived the records. One office told me that I would have to pay $25-25 per child just for shot records. Fortunately, we had only been there for a couple years total and found that the only shot records there had already been forwarded to the family doctor and got the records from there. I have never had a doctor expect to have every single child's records all the way back to birth.

SO, I cannot help but feel like, privacy violated. I do not think she needs to know that my child was constipated in 1997. Or that my other child had strep in 2002. Or so on. No other doctor along the way has ever asked for this stuff. We had one doctor in a town we lived until Aug 1995. The first child was born Nov 1994. Then, we were with that doctor, but went to a different doctor for a year or two to follow our usual doctor when she left that practice. We returned to the practice after a little while of not wanting to drive that far. None of our records went with her but she still did not tell us she needed copies. Then, in 2003, we had it with that practice (think stuff like Ezzo parenting advice and giving my child a Hep A shot without my permission and trying to give my other child a Chicken Pox shot without my permission, this was before Hep A or Chicken Pox were even on the list of ones for school, they were still new). We switched to a different practice. That practice never asked for anything. But the doctor had a baby a year later and ended up not coming back to work. So, I took my children to my family doctor. He never asked for their records. We had been there until recently. This history is not as bad as it sounds. I am recalling doctors over the course of 16 years and 3 moves (meaning, we have lived 4 places during this time)

SO, would this bother you? I feel an invasion of privacy that she wants everything going back 16 years. I think I am going to start by not sending the teens to her afterall. That is for sure. But as far as the rest of the children, should I just look elsewhere? (and it sounds like she is trying to push the vaccination issue and said we would discuss it next visit).

I would not provide what is being requested-

one I would state the cost-"no, we will not pay to have these forwarded-period"-
we recently had to switch and the last place wanted $45.00 for each of us- no way! we said we weren't doing and they took us as a NEW patient, simple just fill out the standard form

I would only provide the vaccine record.

I would request to fill out the NEW patient form (like what you fill out when you go to the ER)- state what MAJOR illness, family history, etc but I would not go into detail at all unless it is an item of concern-- ex. I would not put having

stuff like sinus infection
if the dr has a problem with it- I would find another and I would state clearly that you feel this is a privacy issue that goes beyond simply filling out basic medical history.

I would not provide the records either.

I would just site the cost as well and offer to fill out a new patient form with family medical history.

Sounds like she will attempt to push vaccines. Simply tell her that it is not up for discussion and ask her if she will have a problem providing care to your children given that they will not be receiving any vaccines. If she says yes, Id go elsewhere.

Though doctors will usually fax records to another doctor at no charge, if they have not been patients for awhile there records may be in storage and would take time to dig out which could result in added costs.

I would offer to forward the records from their most recent doctor--and that's it. In my experience doctors don't ask for the records unless there is a particular problem that requires more than parental recollection.

I'm not sure what this has to do with vaccines, but why would you feel it's an invasion of privacy to give full medical records to your new doctor? Even if it's just been minor, run-of-the-mill stuff, shouldn't the doctor have the complete picture?

It seems to me that she may be trying to "punish" the OP for not vaccinating and/or is being dramatic that she needs every last record because they are not fully vaxed in an effort to intimidate her (if you only vaxed this wouldn't be necessary but since you don't...).

I don't think it's weird, an invasion of privacy or necessarily about vaccinations. Every new doctor I've been to see has asked for past records. I suspect it's about two things. One, so they don't have to rely on your memory for past and possibly recurrent problems, or things that you don't consider problematic, but maybe are. They have dates and details right in front of them. Two, insurance and possible future lawsuits. If she gives you medical advice that causes harm due to a pre-existing condition that she didn't know about, that's a liability for her. So if she at least ASKS for all past records and notes that she asks, she's done her due diligence, even if you don't comply.

She actually sounds like a conscientious doctor. I wouldn't fire her over this.

The only thing that would annoy me is being handed a pamphlet about vaccinations and being told that we would "discuss this next time". I would have said, "Thank you for the information, but I have done my research and I have made my decision. If you cannot or will not respect that, please let me know so I can make other arrangements."

I would just tell her that the other records are not available and I've given her all of the info she needs to go forward.
