Painted Dutch Oven??

Dh came home today with a really beautiful dutch oven that his grandma gave him because she came to visit over the weekend and saw a new one sitting by our pantry. Dh bought it at Cabellas because it was on sale and we are camping a lot now. Dh was thrilled that she gave it to us because it was his great-great grandmas and in great shape. I don't know how old it is , but grandpa is 85 yrs old..so ? They never cooked in it..just had it sitting under their living room table. We noticed some flecks of red paint on the exterior lid. Dh tried to scrape them off and realized that the pot was spray painted black and the red was underneath. Then after scratching some more he realized the red was also paint. He could see the black under that.

Dh wants to use this pot so bad..he went to the hardware store and bought paint stripper. He ended up doing most of it with a crazy hard steel brush..there is still a little red paint left here and there , but it is mostly black. I am leery of using it because I don't know about him using the stripper and the residual paint that is still there might be toxic?? I am not sure. I told him that we should send it somewhere to be sand blasted.

What do you think?

Would you use it? There was no paint on the inside..only the exterior..the black paint must have been spray paint because it came off super easy. The red ..I don't know. Normally I would just say forget it, but dh is so eager to use it.

If the paint was only on the outside, it should be ok. The outside is not going to touch your food.

I am assuming it is cast iron. Season it real good it should be good to go. I would suggest seasoning it in the BBQ outside to reduce the smoke in the house.
