What's currently in your medicine cabinet, non-vaxers?

I'm getting completely overwhelmed by reading all of these natural remedy books where they talk about tinctures and things of the like. I don't even know where I'm supposed to get these herbal tinctures from - LOL! For someone who has been used to conventional medicine her whole life, learning natural remedies for her child is quite overwhelming to say the least!

Anyway, I thought I'd ask to get ideas, what natural remedies do you currently have in your medicine cabinet in case of illness/emergencies?

I recently bought Wellness Herbal Kids for Immune Support, which is a combination of many herbs. I haven't had to use it yet but I have it handy in case I foresee a cold or something in my son. That's all I have. He does get a natural multivitamin daily, however.

It can be really overwhelming! One of the biggest gifts I pray that I can impart to my children, is a knowledge of supporting health through healthy living, natural medicine and supplementation, rather than running to the doctor for "cures"!

I'm learning, as well...we've had 3 years now with no need for abx, Dr visits or major illnesses. I think one of the great things about natural medicine/whole health, is that you can tailor it to meet the needs of the individual.

For the most part our children take the following on a daily basis:

-Multi vitamin
-Vitamin C
-Omegas
-probiotic

In the non-summer months they also take vitamin D and rounds of echinacea

If anyone is battling coming down with something, we use Emergen-C and zinc, along with a tailored homeopath for their need. Sometimes they'll boost echinacea and even garlic.

I keep a basic supply of necessities for common things, and then if a need arises, I shop for that. It isn't cheap to build an arsenal up, but a little at a time...now I only spend roughly $30 a month on supplements-most of which I get at Vitacost.com.

My husband and I do the same as above, with some additional things for our own needs.

I've seen good homeopathic starter kits for families, that don't cost too much. I think just going easy on yourself as a learning process is good. We can't know it all, even after years of study, you know? It's a lot shifting from mainstream meds and doctors being the go-to, to taking more responsibility for overall health, and learning what works well for yourself and kids.

Blessings to you on your new path!

I'm pretty relaxed when it comes to health- I figure that our bodies are capable of healing themselves for the most part. Not to mention, my kids rarely get sick. They usually get a few colds each year, and maybe a stomach bug once a year.

My medicine cabinet doesn't have much in it- arnica for bruises, lavender for headaches, an herbal salve for cuts, and some tylenol as a last-ditch resort. I've never needed much in terms of medicine- either western medicine OR herbal remedies.

I'm pretty happy with where we are now considering how sick my kids were when they were younger.

Daily they get:
probiotics
multi-vitamin
fish oil

We also have garlic/mullein oil for ear drops, a homeopathic cold/flu drop that works really well, honey for allergies and some Tylenol.

My kids are very rarely sick with more than a cold now.

Fever over 104- tylenol or advil

ear-aches- Grapeseed extract, or garlic mullein drops, decongestant and otiscope

Uti -Uristatin (supplement) and cranberry forte(integrative therapeutics)

Coughs, chest stuff- Ivy Calm, and face-steamer thingy with Perrubore inhalation tablets that dissolve in the steam

Bruises and skin issues- arnica, benadryl cream and hydro-cortisone cream

Colds and general illnesses around the house- Thymactive (integrateve therapeutics) for everyone until illness passes.

I'm not that big on homeopathics, but we do have some Hylands stuff around the house and I use Rescue Remedy..just in case it works

Hi

We do lots of vitamins.

DS(3) gets vit C, d-3, multi, and probitoics daily

If I suspect a cold or flu or we've been somehwere extra germy(like an indoor playgym) I up the probiotics and vit C.

We use occillicocconium (sp?) for suspected flu- never seems to develop into flu when we use this, the garlc oil for an ear infection, buckwheat honey for coughs, and whatever homeopathic our ped suggests for other things.

Fact is that with our diet(organic whole foods) and vitamins and no vaxes,DShas been sick a total of 5 times since birth- all which lasted about 24 hours. 3 colds, one ear infection, one cough.

For me, natural medicines & remedies are almost a hobby so I have a variety of things on hand and that we take regularly.

First off we all eat plain yogourt with a bit of lemon juice and stevia (for sweetness) every morning as part of our breakfast so that gives us a good start with digestive enzymes and probiotics. In that yogourt I usually mix in some ground flax seeds and chia seeds as well as a bit of bee pollen (all very healthy). In the winter time, I also add 2000 IU's of Vitamin D3 into my kid's yogourt (dh & I take 4000 IU's a day in capsule form per day in the winter). I get the kids Vit D3 in capsule form and I just open up the capsule and mix the powder in with the yogourt...really easy! The Vit D3 supplementation probably made the biggest difference for us last winter with regards to not getting sick...it was amazing (it was our first year supplementing with that). Other than that, if a cold is coming on, we ingest a few drops of grapefruit seed extract mixed with OJ (& sometimes a bit of baking soda and stevia). We also swear by Cold Eeze lozenges which are homeopathic. They work amazingly well! Just make sure you trust your child with a hard candy lozenge and you supervise them. In addition we also keep Hyland's homeopathic complete Flu Care 4 kids which contains Anas Barbariae which is the same homeopathic ingredient as the much more expensive Oscillococcilum (sp?) for much cheaper. DH & I take it too (not just the kids) because there is no such thing as a "child's dose" when it comes to homeopathy...that's just not how it works..
We also have a 100 remedy homeopathic kit and about 4 books for reference and we use those all the time for various issues that arise from having 3 kiddos 5 & under We also love our arnica gel for bumps & bruises as well as our calendula ointment for cuts, burns, etc We have various essential oils that we use for different things though I still have a lot to learn about those!
I would say I'm also less well versed with regard to herbs for healing since I do seem to lean on homeopathy as my go-to thing for healing.

Anyway, I definitely understand how overwhelming it all feels sometimes to learn & acquire all these various products because I still feel that way sometimes too. But over the last few years, as I've become more familiar with all these different things, I've accumulate more of the necessities and feel better prepared. Oh and I am expecting a shipment of homeopathic nosodes in the next month or so (from India where homeopathy is much more common) which are the equivalent of homeopathic vaccines. They have been proven to work extremely well during various outbreaks of diseases in may parts of the world. It's essentially a tiny molecule of the disease which has been diluted and shaken (the typical homeopathic preparation) and when it's ingested, it triggers your body to heal itself from that specific disease. It has also been shown to be effective as a preventative measure when an outbreak occurs. And of course, it doesn't have any of the horrid chemicals that are included in the vaccines nor is it injected directly into your bloodstream where it bypasses your natural defenses. so I'm pretty excited about having those on hand *just in case*.

This, basically. We don't even have tylenol actually. We have bandaids & rubbing alcohol... and a few random expired prescriptions etc. that I haven't gotten around to tossing. That's pretty much it. I figure our bodies can heal themselves just fine, and if I really felt the need for something more, I could run to the store last-minute. We do use a heat pack & ice packs are always in the freezer, and we use baking soda for some things like homemade saline or poison ivy itch relief...

Since this is about caring for an ill child rather than about vaccination I'm moving to H&H.

I am very interested in natural healing, but find myself very relaxed about our health in general. I don't feel the need to stock up on anything, but we have picked up some things along the way as needed.

Echinacea to take at the first sign of illness
Arnica for mild pain relief, mostly for the children
Traumeel, homeopathic cream for muscle aches and joint pain
Uva Ursi, for fast relief of UTI

We also pick up as needed food products for healing - garlic, ginger, honey, lemon

I also have a bottle of motrin. This because of a pretty severe illness my one child went through and we needed something for joint pain until we found the traumeel. But I do feel comfortable having a fever reducer in the house in case of a fever over 104. That's where my comfort ends!

What is yin chiao, sangre de drago, and sheng gu shui?

Where do you get your zinc liquid?

Love your list!

I have alot in my kit, except it is not in one box. I guess I should compile it. I also have a must for kids, honey or maple syrup. If my kids get and owie, I put one of the two sweeteners om the bandaid first as it promotes good healing, and then of course they get to lick the spoon afterwards. Always makes thing better.

I get my liquid zinc through www.emersonecologics.com

yin chiao is a formulation of chinese herbs to be used at the onset of cold/flu symptoms. Stops anything in it's tracks. The pills are soft and can be squished into applesauce and it's safe for kiddos.

zheng gu shui is a bone setting linament. Excellent for breaks, but also equally fabulous for tendon/ligament/muscle injury.

Sangre de drago is the sap from a tree in the rainforest. Fabulous stuff. Will seal a wound almost on contact, prevent infection, stop bleeding (hello, dh's head after he shaves it!) great for skin conditions and there are studies on pubmed as it's been shown to be amazing for gut damage. Great stuff, awesome to have on hand after food poisoning and a must for anyone with ulcerative colitis and the like.

We love honey too! We have bees and are very grateful for all that they share. It's helped many a wound, burn, sore throat, abscess etc.

no, I had to seek out sources. Dr Shen's is the Yin Chiao I use. You have to be pretty careful with chinese herbs in terms of source. I trust Dr. Shen's.
http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Shens-Yin-C.../dp/B00028OMR2

They also carry Zong Gan Ling which I say is the man version. It's for people who DON'T take anything at the first sign and then are miserable later. (tee hee.)

Zheng gu shui can be gotten anywhere. Amazon carries it as well: http://www.amazon.com/Zheng-Gu-Shui-.../dp/B002NWYG7Q

I use Amazon Herb Co's Rainforest Bio Energetics sangre de drago. There's a ton of controversy over the company. However the sangre de drago is great stuff. I've never seen it carried in a B&M store. http://www.amazonbioenergetics.com/sangre-de-drago.htm

I have a bunch of things, although not the length of Panserbjorne's list.

The two tinctures that are totally rocking my world right now are the Calendula and Hypericum (St John's Wort) tinctures. I am amazed again and again how well they work for skin issues. I cut off a HUGE part of my thumb in January, by the beginning of March it was almost totally healed. I was doing other things (cell salts, homeopathics) but I believe the wash did a big part of it.

What I use it for, usually at around a 1:10 strength (tincture to water).
poison ivy
diaper rash
skin itchies
washes for cuts to clean and then for daily treatment
eczema

I'm sure other things. This has been one of the easiest things (in terms of finding and ease of use) to add to my toolbox and clearly useful.

Learning about this is overwhelming, but I try to think of it as a hobby or job. A fun thing to learn. I am thrilled that my boys think all of this is normal.
