If you'd like to skip my rant, my dental question is at the end of the post
So today was my 2.5yo DDs first dentist appointment. We went to one of the few Chicago places that accepts Medicaid. I was allowed back with her this time but was told that I would not be allowed back for future visits because "even if they scream and cry for you they're better off without you". Huh? (We won't be going back
)
We got there and the hygenist told me what they'd be doing- counting teeth, checking cavaties, and fluoride treatment. I made him aware that I was decline the fluoride and gave my reasons to do so. Oh man. He pushed and pushed and pushed. You'd think he had stock in the fluoride industry! I finally told him "I'd appreciate it if you'd respect my decision." He paused and told me, in a not so nice (kind of snooty) tone, "Well, I'd RESPECT it if you'd respect why I'm recommending fluoride". I told him "sure, I respect that" (I'm not for fluoride but it was all I could do to get him to quit blabbering about it). He then asked me quite rudely, "Is English your second language?" Uh.. I beg your pardon?! It's a low income clinic in a mostly hispanic neighborhood. English is my first language, and even though I look hispanic... I speak excellent English. How dare he ask me if English was my second language after I just went through the intricate scientific mumbo jumbo with him. Egh.
He was wonderful with DD though. DD is a very shy girl but he somehow managed to get her to open her mouth. No cavaties
I did find out though that she has calculus (red buildup) on her teeth, and he thinks it is caused by her getting too much iron. We don't supplement with anything, and she doesn't eat much meat. Could this be caused from baby formula (she was formula fed as a baby, long story)? Anyone have the same experience? He said that it's not a concern dental-wise but with the amount she has he advised me to call the doctor for a blood test (to check iron and heavy metals) because the amount of iron that causes that much calculus is pretty substantial and could harm her organs.
So I'm waiting for a call back from our (awesome
) family doctor.
AND I'm on the hunt again for another dentist.
