How can I prepare my toddler for my upcoming trip?

DH and I will be going on a trip soon, and will be away for a week. My toddler has never been away from me except when I've gone away for a few hours in the evening when he was sleeping, or if I've run to the store and left him with DH. My mom will be staying with him and my 4yo. DS will be 20 months when we go.

Any tips for preparing him for this? I don't know how much he'll understand, but I don't want to just leave without attempting to prepare him for it.

I don't think there's a whole lot you can do to prepare him. I would tell him you were going and him know that so and so will be putting him to bed and that you want him to be a good boy and help so and so with the house, and that sort of thing. If you don't make it a big deal, then he won't see it as a big deal.

I have left both of mine around that age and it is actually easier to leave them than the older kids who totally understand that you are leaving.

Have a great trip! He'll be just fine.
