Student Single Mother Aid

Hello Mamas, I was wondering if anyone knows of any financial help (scholarships, grants, discounts, etc) for single Mothers who are students. It would be great if we could gather up a bunch of sources and put them in a sticky. I don`t know of any, but figured I could come here and ask while I begin my search. Hope some of you have some good sources.

I'd love to know too. I'm planning on starting classes, but need more information about single moms scholarships.

I've been a student for a year now, and I think someone needs to crack the myth that there are "a lot of scholarships for single moms". Seriously. I have bugged my financial aid office, and searched the internet, and I think it's just a slogan to get women to visit websites. I have found a few that were specifically aimed at single mothers- but they are the typical, one award of $1000 scholarships, so most single moms are not going to get any money that way. The only advantage to being a single parent and full time student is that we are often poor enough to qualify for maximum pell grants, state need grants, and whatever need based aid that's available through fafsa. My strategy so far has been to apply as early as humanly possible for the fafsa, apply for my school's foundation scholarships, and let fastweb.com send me scholarship matches. I maintain super high grades, and can whip out a pretty good short essay on why I think sprinkler systems are awesome or whatever. The one thing that I have found is that the more specific you are about what you want to do, and depending on what that is, the more scholarships you can find for students in that field. Nursing, for example, seems to be really huge. Oh, and bugging your financial aid dept (politely of course) can help. If you tell them you have a bad situation, they seem to be able to squeeze out a summer pell grant or some extra loans.

BIG

It's a myth. It sucks. But, staying on the good side of your financial aid office helps a TON!

a BIG yeah that too.

this whole big scholarship thing is a big myth. just even scholarship in general is a big myth.

the best resource is your school.

AND if you are in the science field then good for you. tonnes of scholarships there.

i have not pursued looking for private scholarships. tried initially but then gave up. waste of my time. lots of scams out there.

filing for scholarships is also a pain in the ^^^^. chasing after good recommendation letters, writing your own personal statement all takes time. for me i have discovered its not worth my time and effort to chase after $100 scholarships.

i dont look at 'monetary ways' as the only way of getting my needs met.

i focus on taking chances and following what i am called to do.

due to that right now i live rent and food free. i am a part time nanny and housekeeper at one of my proffs house. a proff who has known me a while, who has been a poor non traditional student himself and supports me 'because i have faith in you'. i am not the only one. i have met many single moms who have people watching out for them. mostly with rent free living.

without rent, its not too difficult to live simply on grants and small loans and whatever scholarships you can get.

and oh yes!!!! GRADES!!!! keep them up. it affects the amount of scholarship you get. along with your past history. your unique hardship. being a single mom is NOT a hardship, but it does contribute.

Wow Meemee!!! Good for you for having a professor be so helpful! I`ve never heard of anyone doing such a thing. Gives me hope in humanity.

And yes, I`ve been searching for single mother scholarships and grants and 99% of the stuff out there on the net are scams. How terrible is that, to prey on needy, broke, single mothers. I did find a few that are legit, here they are:

http://www.scholarships.com/financia...e-mothers.aspx

http://www.singlemom.com/EducationAn...olarships.aspx

http://www.educationgrant.com/2009/0...-scholarships/

http://www.antshe.org/AwardsandSchol...holarships.htm

I wouldn`t rule out spending some time searching for scholarships. I have applied in the past and been approved. One from Sallie Mae was for $3000 and I forgot what the other one was from. I am just terrible at remembering dates and always seem to find the applications after they are due. And it is a lot of work!!! Why torture the applicant in such a way! It`s like they want to make sure you are desperate enough to spend days filling out their apps, writing essays, bugging people for letters of recommendation, etc. They should just ask for grades and bank statements! lol
My fin aid office usually funds me enough to cover my expenses, but they ALWAYS max me out on the amount of student loans I can get first, and THEN give me grants and scholarships. grrrrrrr ok, rant done.
