We live in a pets allowed townhouse complex and Sunday evening my son comes in the house and tells me there are two dogs loose in the parking lot. I go out with him to see a white german shepherd and a rottweiler. Both look like purebreds... but not great examples of the breeds.
Some neighbors were out there calling the police, who said they could do nothing if the dogs were not aggressive. They suggested calling animal control at 8am when they opened.
The shepherd was covered in mud, and limping badly. The rott was in definite danger of being shot by someone. Other possible scenarios were getting hit by a car, causing an accident, or being picked up by someone who would use them for training dogs for fighting. I didn't want to see any of that happen so my son and I caught them and brought them in the house.
I was planning, at first, to call the dog warden in the morning... but they are sweet and gentle dogs. The kind of dogs that look as if they were well-loved at some point.
We took them to our amazing vet last evening for a check-up and a scan for microchips. No microchips. I have searched craigslist, the local papers, and called the dog pound looking for their owner. They are very attached so I do believe they were together.
The shepherd has bad hips and is very overweight and I don't think she could have gotten far if they escaped so I don't think they are from a different city.
I think they were dropped off
We named the shepherd Lily. She is around 7-8 years old, most likely spayed (scar on her belly), 110 pounds (should probably be closer to 90), and she has a mass in her belly... which is painful. It took three baths to get all the mud off of her. She is housebroken and goes to the door when she wants outside to potty.
We named the rott Jezebel. She is around 2, not spayed, 82 pounds, and she is healthy. She stunk badly but one bath got her clean. She is housebroken too but seems to just hold it till we take her out (which is what my lab/rott mix boy does).
They are such sweet dogs and we'd probably keep them all if we owned a house. But our youngest dog is a giant puppy (7 month old Bernese Mountain Dog) and he's run into Lily a couple times and made her cry.
Anyways, we have to wait another day before we can decide anything because the law is you have to hold a stray dog 72 hours before you can consider it *yours*. I'm so sad that either they were dropped off or someone isn't looking very hard for them
