Non-Vaccinating Ear Piercing Places in MA?

Hi!

I do not vaccinate and am looking for a legitimate place {business, store} that accepts this, where I can take my child to have her ears pierced.

I know that most places require a vacc. record and was wondering if someone knows of a location in MA.

I am willing to travel...

I had my oldest dd's ears pierced in April at a jewelry store. She was almost 5 yrs old and no one asked me anything about vaxes.

I've been told the best place to get it done is an actual piercing parlor. They have more rigid cleanliness codes and such. DON'T go to Wal-mart, Claire's and the like! Good luck!

Do you have a pediatrician? I vax but I had DD's done there. I think it was $35 and it inc earings lol
I'd imagine if your kid's doctor is ok with not vaxxing in the first place they'd be ok with piercing an invaxxed kid, right?

I'm a pediatrician who used to do ear piercings. We don't anymore. Funny as it may seem, my recommendation for where to get ears pierced is not what most people expect. I tell people to go to one of the piercing parlors (piercing pagoda, etc...)!

There used to be concerns about cleanliness, but now that the equipment is basically all single use (at least everything that comes in contact with the child), the infection concern is minimal.

While I am of course pro-immunization, and I tell my patients who are getting immunizations to at least wait until after the first set, I would tell my patients who aren't immunized to wait a little longer (preferably until at least 6 months), and then just simply watch for signs of infection.

Again, my concern isn't infection because the equipment isn't clean, but simply that, until it heals, it is an open wound.

Why don't I do it? They do a lot more of them than I ever did, so, they're faster, it's less painful, and they're better at symmetry! Of all the things I need a mother complaining to me about, asymmetrical piercings isn't one of them!

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a place that will do it on an unimmunized child. You might have to make a notation on the waiver, but it shouldn't be a big deal.

Thankyou,

I looked into Pagoda Piercing and they don't do any unimmunized piercings, even if a religious exemption is provided. I contacted the Cambridge branch and spoke to Autumn the {Store Manager} who contacted Linda the {District Manager} because she wasn't even sure if they could pierce unimmunized children.

On a differant note,

My uncle's wife has a sister who had her daugter's ears pierced at Salem Hospital, but they only do it on their own patients. That means that I would have to change my daughter's pediatrician to do this and that's too much of a hassle, besides, I like my daughter's doctor very much.

I guess that I am out of options, I am going to have a family member do them, they have experience in these things anyway, but I just wanted to minimize the overall pain that she would feel.

No way out...

A lot of tattoo shops have professional piercers on staff. Call around. You want a professional grade hollow bore needle, DO NOT USE A PIERCING GUN. They are not sterile, can't be autoclaved.

If I recall, many places use sealed piercing guns. I don't know how they get them clean before they seal them though. I've never had a problem with the guns but you may want to look into that further.

I've never had anyone ask for my shot records, and I've had my ears pierced multiple times (I have lots of holes lol) in southern MA. I had them pierced at the mall when I was 5... and at the Swansea mall Piercing Pagoda (or Claires?) when I was 17.. and at Walmart in Seekonk when I was 18 maybe... so that was around 9-10 years ago, maybe the shot requirement is new??? I would call a few places & ask if they need to see any health papers before piercing. They may have a policy of not piercing unvaxed kids but they may not actually verify it at some places.

nak.... I've had 2 girls done at 11w one at claires other at PP. they asked about vax andI said yup and we were on our way. no proof required. personally I think this is a good case for dont ask dont tell.

fwiw, my pedi and I discussed it for both girls. dd2 hadnt been vax b/c she'd been in the hospital for rsv. he said the only vax that might remotely be helpful was tetanus and since they're using a disposible gun, that didnt even apply. so he prefered that we wait but if I was highly motivated, to go ahead and do them whenever.

personally, we do them young before baby can touch her ears. that way, I just clean when I do a diaper change and its done. to my dds they're just a way of life and never get bothered.

doesn't matter. microscopic blood spray is the issue and sealing doesn't make a difference. if it can't be autoclaved (and guns can't be) they're not sterile. Piercing guns/studs are also WAY more traumatic to the surrounding tissue than a hollow bore needle so disposable ones might help the pathogen issue, but still aren't the best choice for the tissue.

They must've been disposable ones.

I didn't know about the guns being more traumatic to the surrounding tissue though!

Try this pediatrician in Lawrenceville Georgia. She has a baby ear piercing service. Not 100% sure if she requires a vacc.
