Texas doctor giving me problems.

We just moved to Texas. I requested our exemption forms online from the TXDSHS. I have not received them yet though.

I called the pediatrician (we live in a tiny town, and only have a few to choose from, so I went with the female) to make an appointment for my 3 young children. I told the nurse I had a question before I made my appointment and wasted the Dr's (and my) time by coming in. I asked "Is it going to be an issue that we're on a delayed/selective schedule for vaccines for two of our three children" and the nurse said she'd ask and call me back.

She called back and asked me to check with my insurance to see if they pay for vaccinations. I told her that yes they do (it's something I already know off hand. We have BCBSPPO). She then said "well, we don't have any vaccines in private stock so we wouldn't be able to give them any shots if they needed them". And I said, well, that's okay. Then she said, I'll have to call you back.

Firstly, what exactly does "private stock" mean?
Secondly, what does my insurance's coverage of vaccines have to do with anything? I'd pay OOP for them if my child needed any and they weren't covered.
Thirdly, am I getting the run around. Am I wasting my time with this office or do you think this doctor really doesn't want to see my children?

I hate that there's very little options for local doctors. We'd have to drive almost 3 hours away to see a different doctor. That's a long journey for three young children. But it may be worth it if I could find a vaccine friendly doctor.... which is why I'm going to go ask in a different thread if there are any in the San Antonio area.

Thank you all so much for any input or thoughts.

I have heard of some offices just not giving vaccines...maybe they are one of them and send all their patients to the health department.

If that is the case, this is the perfect office!! I would just wait and see what they say when they call back.

Awesome, thank you! I sort of thought that might have been what the receptionist meant when she said "private stock", but I was unsure.

I have no idea what is up with the nurse.

It sounds like the nurse is clueless. If you post on a local area board, if there is one in your area, maybe people can help you find doctors already known to be non-vaxing friendly. Where I live, suburb of Dallas, some doctors are very good about it, some are awful.

The office called back. What a mess.

First off, they can't see 2 or all 3 kids on one visit "it takes up too much time". :

They explained that private stock is where my insurance pays 100% of my child's vaccinations, therefore they have to keep in stock vaccines paid for by my insurance and they don't. They also don't know when they'll be ordering any and suggested I take them to the health dept.

So, I went ahead and made appointments, August 24th, 26th and Sept. 1st. Now, in my opinion, I would have rather taken a "free" (less booked) day in September to take all 3 of my children at once to be seen rather than spread it out and still have to take all 3 kids with me. I'm a stay at home mom, my husband works most week days...I don't have any local family or friends to watch my other two. That means I have to take all 3 kids on 3 separate days, which increases their risks of catching an illness. Not to mention, it's tiring on all of us.

Oh, and they have a policy where I have to call them the day before and confirm the appointment or they cancel it. Are you kidding me?

So...needless to say, I'm going to make an appointment with Dr. McMains in San Antonio even thought it is 3 hours away! I'll just keep this local doctor as a back-up.

I'm pretty annoyed with this town and all of the doctors here. Sorry to rant/vent.

bummer! and making you make appointments on separate days is boloney. They could just schedule 3 appointments back to back for your children....no big deal.

Do you need to see a ped? Is there a family doctor in your area that you could see instead?

And no way would I want to deal with that office.... it all sounds crazy.

K, I understand the insurance issue but the appointment thing is BS. Even when you book children together they each have their own appointment block and separate co-pay; I've taken my children to McMains together.

This. And I think it's NUTS that you have to call them to confirm the appt, not the other way around.

I LOVE my family doc. I can come in with one kid and ask a question about another. If you run into a childhood condition requiring more specialized care, a referral to a ped is the way to go. Otherwise, I personally don't see the need.

Yeah, they don't have family doctors here. I guess it's just a small town thing? I don't know. The family doctors I have called to ask if they'd see them, said no, because they don't specialize in pediatrics. :

I'm happy with doing it this way, for now. I hope Dr.M works out for us.

Oh, and Dr.M's policy is that she can only see 2 kids at once and the 3rd at a different time. So I ended up having to make 1 morning and 1 afternoon appointment for 2 kids. No big deal, we'll just eat lunch and go shopping while we wait.

A lot of docs have their appointments organized so that they only see new patients (or physicals, etc.) in certain slots because they take a long time and they need to keep slots open for rechecks, etc. I know it doesn't seem to make sense but having worked in different types of docs offices over the years...it really does. With insurance the way it is now docs have to see a staggering number of patients and there is a lot of paperwork that goes with it. I do think the rule of making you call to confirm vs them calling to confirm is tacky and I wouldn't like it. I don't know if it would be such a deal breaker for me that I would drive to a doc three hours away to avoid them. That is a long way and will make it so that a sick child would need to travel extremely far to see their regular doc or have to possibly go to an acute care clinic. You might want to see if this ped will even see your kids for a sick visit (be your backup) if they haven't seen them before. In your place I would go with the local doc first and only switch if it was a really bad fit for all of you.
