explosive kids and their sibs

okay, so we try to use the collaborative problem solving approach with DS (8) as much as possible... his lil sis is 3.5 and he is triggered very easily by her.

she is sweet and loving and generous except when DS freaks on her. which recently is all the time. she was writing in one of his notebooks today and he yells and rips it out of her hand and calls her names. i try to intervene but the damage is done already. she starts throwing things and stabs him with the pencil, which of course enrages him and he hits her. screaming all around. tears. name calling. and a mom very tired of this behavior.

anyone have any strategies for nipping this stuff in the bud? DS freaks so fast that it's hard to do anything. i have tried getting them to go in different rooms, but they both seem to feel this is punishment and so resist. i'm tearing my hair out here.

I don't have a suggestion. I just know how crazy-making this can me.
