Huge Tantrum?

DD was looking to be a bit tired (but not at the overtired stage yet) so I decided to start getting her up to bed for her nap early..

WELL ... she found our art from that morning and wanted to take the popsicle stick off taht we had glued to the cardboard... i let her, then she had a huge freak out taht there is still cardboard pieces (little itty bitty ones) stuck to the stick.. there was no getting it off so i explained that to her, suggested for her to use the other side, tried to distract her... nothing helped... she started crying.. and i tried to comfort her... then she became hysterical... she just cried and cried and cried until she was shaking and just kept pointing to her now messed up popsicle stick..

she communicates very well and this is weird behaviour.. she has the occasional crying spell but because she is pretty advanced in her language we are ALWAYS able to steer her away from anything full blown...

so i took her upstairs and started to put her down for her nap and kept hugging her... and she was trying to tell me something.. she wanted something and i couldnt understand her because she was shaking so much in between waaaaaaaaaaaaaahs.. so i told her i cant understand until she stops crying...

this went on for about 40 minutes! thank goodness my 3 month old was sleeping through this....

what did i do wrong and how can i correct this next time?

Can you talk with her when she wakes up? She might be able to tell you what the problem really was.

She may have been tireder than you thought. My DD melts down quite dramatically when she's crossed the line. The only cure is to put her to bed and let her sleep it off.

Honestly, sometimes they just freak out. It sounds like she was probably more tired than you thought. IME, the best thing to do is to leave them be. Stay near them so they know they aren't abandoned but, at least with my kids, touching them and talking to them drives them further over the edge.
