Multiples

I'm participating in this study, because I've been trying (and trying and trying) for four years to have a baby.

BUT I've read a few times that IUI has a higher incidence of multiples that even IVF. The thought of twins makes me nervous. I feel a bit weak thinking of triplets. Higher order multiples? Break out the smelling salts.

Is it true? Are there any studies (or really reliable websites) that can assess my risk of multiples?

From what I know the chance of twins with Clomid and IUI is about 10%. For triplets and above, it's considerably lower than that.

With injectables and IUI, the rate spikes to a 25-30% chance of conceiving multiples with high-order multiples included in that.

If they monitor closely to count the number of follicles you have at trigger, you could ask that the cycle be canceled at a certain number to reduce the risk of multiples. Although I'm not sure what the study requires of you.

Typically the more follicles you have the belief is the more multiples you'll have.

Twins can happen no matter what you do, so I would just give that one up fwiw.

If you go to the Resolve website they have a lot of info on this if you dig around.

We got pregnant with twins on an IUI w/ injectable cycle. They were watching 3 eggs that were all different sizes and said if we trigger the one night we might catch one egg and if we trigger the next night we might get maybe 2, so we trigger the first night to catch one... I was game for waiting, but DH didn't want to chance it (my DH is a triplet and his older brother and siter are twins - all clomid babies) and we ended up catching 2. I just tell myself anytime you are using fertility you are putting yourself at increased risk of multiples, to me, that is just a given and I've totally accepted it. Good luck with your study! Hope it works for you!!!!

I had never heard of so many multiples with Clomid - but then again, we used Femara for all IUI's. (RE said it usually makes one good egg, as apposed to increasing # of eggs) Also, I wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you get another chance once your body heals.

It might be a mix of the heredity factor as well though. There are like 7 sets of twins in like 5 generations. I know it has to be on the mothers side, but there are twins on his father's side too!!! Crazy!!

Thanks for your kind words. We are headed towards IVF next as long as i pass all the pre-tests. Good luck to you!!
