A Couple Questions

Hey everybody!

I just brought my six month old for a well baby visit with a new ped, and while she was examining him, before I even knew what she was doing, she moved his foreskin slightly to look at the tip. After looking up a lot of information, I know that this sort of movement, though slight, is retraction, and will be more on guard next visit (as in not taking his diaper off--I was surprised as our last doctor never touched his penis). My question is this: should I soak him in anything or dab anything on the tip to prevent infection, or just leave it alone and keep an eye out for infection?

My second question is about him grabbing himself. Whenever he's naked now he's going after it, and while I don't want to discourage that in any way, it makes me nervous how hard he tugs. Should I let him go at it or try to distract him until he is better coordinated and won't be so forceful?

Thank you in advance!!

they all tug at themselves really hard! It totally seems like it would hurt them, but it doesn't. I would just let him do it.

About the retraction , I would just keep an eye on it. It doesn't sound like she used that much force. Did he scream or cry? If he did there is more cause for concern. Just try to keep it clean and open to the air as much as possible. This way, if there is anything that needs healing, it will go faster than if kept in a diaper for long periods.

LOL-the tugging..... my son pulls so hard on himself it looks like a rubber band snapping{{OUCH!!!}} It doesn't seem to hurt and in fact it's more like he enjoys it.

Did he act like it hurt? If so watch him, but if not probably nothing happened. My ped looks at DS only and checks his testicles, but that's it, she is intact friendly though.

Nah, he didn't respond at all. Everything looks okay so I guess it's fine!

The extreme tugging makes me cringe but he seems to be having a good time! LOL Thanks for the responses!

It isnt so much about how delicate the foreskin is because it really isnt at least under normal "wear & tear" like the boy trying to tie it around things or sticking stuff in there. It is more about the Dr. causing the foreskin to rip away from the glans and possibly causing scar tissue to form. Also it is scary when a Dr. tells you there is a problem when really there isnt other than the Dr. not knowing what he/she is talking about.

Even though what she did was "gentle" it still isnt a good idea at all to allow a Dr. to mess with it. We have had more than a few stories here where the Dr. just gently moved things around then all the sudden when the boy was X age the Dr. yanked or tried to yank it all the way back without warning because the Dr. felt/was taught that by X age it should retract and if it dosnt then something is wrong. Which as we all know is not accurate information.

So best to put a stop to it right now so you or your ds dosnt have to worry about being hurt in the future.
