traveling by train with little ones?

We're going to visit family back home this weekend and I'm thinking about extending our trip by a couple of days and then taking the train back home. Has anyone done this? I'm trying to figure out the logisitics - I'll have DD4, DD 3 months, 2 carseats, a small suitcase, diaper bag, possibly a stroller? Does someone from Amtrak help you with/store your luggage for you?
Help!

I love traveling by Amtrak. But I have never traveled with that much gear. The first time I traveled with ds he was 8 months old. I brought a stroller, diaper bag, and a duffle bag. They will help you with your stuff if you need it, but I have noticed sometimes they are under staffed and it is harder to find someone. I would call ahead and arrive early to insure you have someone to help you.

Would your trip involve you switching trains??

I travel on Amtrak once or twice a year and have for several years.

Are you looking at coach or getting a room?

You can check bags but you need to get there about an hour ahead of time. There is limited storage on the train so you will need to plan to check your extra bags. They are not particular careful with luggage so you need to decide on your comfort level with checking the carseat. That being said, we always check ours (we have a special bag for it so it doesn't get filthy). There are no seat belts so the carseat will not be of any use to you on the train. In have never had any experience with anyone being even remotely helpful if you are in the coach section and the seats are not assigned. It is every person for his/herself.

How many hours/what time of day would you be on the train?

I'd bring a luggage cart and a sling instead of a stroller.

The longer the train ride, the more helpful the attendants.

i think it probably depends on where you are traveling. I have had excellent experiences outside the Northeast Corridor, and mediocre ones within it. (I travel from southwest of DC to northeast of NYC). I've never checked a bag, and what I do is have the person dropping me off help me onto the train, and I stow the luggage while they are watching/corralling/holding the child. i try my hardest to have a trip where I don't have to change trains (and in fact, re-routed my son and I to a city an hour east of our home when our last trip got screwed up and we would have had to change trains otherwise). I've also never had a problem storing my luggage--though I do try to get on in smaller cities before the train would have really filled up. If you are polite about asking someone to move so your whole family can sit together, people are generally accommodating as well.

Our last trip, we got into the station after midnight due to terrible delays, and my DP was late to pick us up (that was the trip where we were re-routed) and the conductors not only unloaded all of our bags for me, they then drove us and the stuff in their golf cart to the front of the station while my son slept in my arms. But, I do recommend a luggage cart, a sling and no stroller. And, be ready to tip a porter for assisting you. Bring new toys that are a surprise, and be ready to read tons of books. I have found that the other passengers are totally understanding of grumpy and/or loud children as long as the parent is attempting to engage them and is remaining calm and happy in the process.
