Old down comforters and pillows, any ideas?

I have at least two king size down comforters and several 100% down pillows (meaning there are no feathers mixed in) that have outlived their welcome in my home. I simply don't need them.

Aside from donating them, does anyone know of a use for the down?

The comforters look ratty and I don't think agencies in our area would accept the pillows.

Our local humane society is always looking for blankets & stuff.

I have also used old comforters to make dog beds for our dogs.

If you found someone who makes custom sleeping bags they may be very happy to take the down.

Compost

I think the animal shelters would be worth a try. They may say no because of the difficulty associated with washing and drying, ours will only take towels and plain blankets, but it's certainly worth looking into.

If you can't find a way to re-use them, you may be able to compost the down inside. Our current composting facility accepts feathers.

If it's real down it might be worth cleaning the down and replacing the outer fabric (I think it's called drill?). So maybe Freecycle would be a good place?

I would try a local animal shelter...

Scandia down stores with refurbish down items (take the down and add a new cover plus any additional down it needs).  I guess I would do that first unless someone in your household just can be around down.

I used our old ones to wrap our couch cushions when they were starting to droop. Super comfortable now.
