Is it ok to occationally eat crap? - Page 3

I agree, sometimes it's your body telling you what you need. Especially in first tri, when getting any protein can be SO hard and yet is so important for the health of the whole pregnancy, I ate hamburgers (normally I never eat them at all). I tried to get them from good places when I could, but sometimes not! And Taco Bell bean burritos we my go-to first tri with DD-- this time it was good for about two weeks and then just seeing a TB made me feel sick!

I knew that the vast majority of the time I was eating organic salads and good veggie soups and even just good crackers... you are sometimes just in survival mode, though!

So, for those of you who had persistent (as in, you ate the food but continued to want it)cravings, and have already had your baby, what happened?

For me, the cravings just disappeared. I haven't eaten a single reeses cup since I delivered, and have only started craving pizza again since I went dairy free.

Luckily it took the heartburn with it. I also haven't needed a single tums, and I was eating them like candy.

I had an italian beef craving with DD. I ate so many different italian beefs but not a single one was right.

After I had her, I still craved it. Finally at about 1 1/2 months pp my grandma made some homemade italian beef and I nearly cried while I ate it because it was EXACTLY what I had been wanting!

My craving during this pregnancy so far has been Banquet Pot Pies (the horrible microwavable ones), mashed potatoes from a box, and spinach and tomato salad.

I think I've been fortunate that I live in an area (San Francisco) where fast food is really hard to come by. There's nothing within walking distance, and we very rarely drive our car, so to get something junky we'd have to REALLY want it.

That being said, when I was super nauseous and I couldn't eat anything, I think twice I made my husband drive me to In-N-Out burger because it was the only thing I thought I could stomach. There were some pizza orders in there as well...and some Lucky Charms...and some ice cream...

Now that nausea isn't an issue, I'm eating way better, but we for sure eat the occasional crap when we're too exhausted to cook or go to the store. Even then, I do try to balance it out...eating salad with our delivered pizza, getting it with spinach and veggies on it. Doesn't make it good, but a little better.

I can definitely tell when I haven't had enough to eat and my body is just calorie craving -- those nights I come home from work and want to just soak some bread in olive oil or slather butter all over it, or eat an entire pint of ice cream. I normally don't have any kind of sweet tooth and really keep the refined sugar to a bare minimum, so craving sugary stuff just says to me that my body needs calories. I try to go with fat and protein instead - eating protein instead of sugar works EVERY time. If I'm feeling desperately hungry like that, my rule is to eat a handful of almonds before I decide what I want to eat.

Sure, indulge every once in a while.

But OP, if you are gluten-free because you have celiac or gluten intolerance, PLEASE only eat gluten-free junk food! It does cost more than the mainstream stuff, but it won't destroy your intestines.

I only want chocolate pudding when I am pregnant, I don't buy it or eat it any other time.

I can't eat little mini pizzas, those cheapy 10 for $10 ones at the grocery store. I ate those with my first, and I don't think I will ever eat them again.

I just found this little gem earlier... (I've been having charlie horses)
"A one-ounce serving of potato chips provides, on average, 460 milligrams of potassium — as much as a medium banana."

Every pregnancy, I start out (before I get sick) intending to keep eating the same healthy, natural diet that I eat when I'm not pregnant.

And every time, I eat horribly the first trimester. For me, it's not a function of cravings as much as the convenience. I absolutely cannot handle raw meat in the first trimester, so we do a lot of take-out.

Totally couldn't eat another Whopper for a long time after I had ds. It's been almost 7 years since I delivered him and I think I've eaten maybe 3 Whoppers in that 7 years. It took maybe 2 years after I delivered ds before I ate my first one. LOL!

I have no idea if it'll come back if/when I get pregnant again. Kinda hoping not because I obviously have no will power

With my first pregnancy I lost 18 pounds in the first two trimesters. I ate *anything* I could stand. This time I haven't had quite as drastic of an experience, but I'm 35 weeks and I've gained 12 pounds. I eat anything that sounds good because if food doesn't sound good I simply cannot force myself to eat it. The baby will suck the last bits of nutrition from my bones and then I can rebuild after birth. Is it the best? No. But it's a lot better than simply not eating anything.

This thread has seriously lifted a lot of guilt off of my shoulders. I have not been eating terribly, but the more time I spend on MDC the worse I feel about my eating habits. I've been having so many food aversions, and the nausea still comes and goes (I'm 15 weeks now) so like many of you, I eat what I can.

I've had a terrible time eating with this pregnancy, so if and when I have a craving, I indulge. Just this week I had to have an Arby's roast beef sandwich. Darn it was Good! All things in moderation is my motto.
