Biting twins!

Hi! I'm currently nursing my (2) 4 month old twin boys. I've nursed 4 other children previously without so much as a hiccup, but what I'm experiencing now has me stumped. Emmett, the younger of the two, has recently started biting. I've had babies bite before, but nothing like this. It started approx. 3 days ago. Emmet will act excited to latch on and will even open up his mouth, eager to nurse. Instead of latching on, he will close his little jaws tightly around my nipple forcing me to cry out in pain (which I do every time out of sheer pain) Of course he looks stunned for a split second, but then laughs, ready to do it again. A few times in the last 3 days Emmett has successfully nursed. These times occurred mostly at night, when he was starving after having slept for 4 or more hours straight. I've been bitten so many times today that my nipples are tingley and sore. Lincoln (the other twin) doesn't seem to be having any problem getting milk and still happily nurses right on schedule. Generally I will switch breasts for each baby, for each feeding to keep things equal. I know it isn't a problem with my letdown, since generally Emmett will bite long before my milk would or could let down. I'm just so lost as to what to do. The last thing I want to do is feed of of my boys formula, but I'm starting to wonder how long we can go on like this! Any advice would be appreciated Thanks!

have you tried giving emmett something else to chew on? i noticed that dd was starting to gnaw a bit on my nipples a couple weeks ago, so before nursing, i'd give her something to chew on... my knuckle, her giraffe, a chewy bit on one of her toys... she also seemed to really enjoy a gum massage with a cold damp washcloth. it started with me checking her gums to see if i could feel any bumps, but she liked having the pressure and soothing coldness on her gums, and it really seemed to reduced her interest in gnawing rather than sucking. so far, no teeth, but there's definitely something going on with them!
