Has anybody used the book on CD version of "Story of the World" (vol 1) read by Jim Weiss? If so, what was your opinion? Did it keep your kids engaged as much as if you were reading to them??

We also have it and listen in the car. It's very interesting in the car and I find myself really enjoying it. The problem is that when you listen to it in the car, you're listening to chapter after chapter very quickly. If you get the activity book, you'll have to spend more time on each chapter. I think it would be better to listen to the 1 chapter and then do the activities that go along with it.
Anyway, we like it. The only thing I don't like about SOTW is that we're secular and the bible stories are taught as fact, not stories. Other things, myths and such, are told as stories, but religious stuff is taught as historical fact. I always tell my kids why that bothers me and they probably get tired of me saying "Some people think that this is history, but others(like me) think it's just a story." I feel like I have to qualify that for them. I don't like my history curriculum to double as religious propaganda, but the historical layout is too good to pass up just based on that.
