how much formal handwriting?

I was curious how much formal handwriting is necessary. I noticed many curriculums go up to around 6th grade. Is that really necessary? I was only planning on doing it 1-3. Is that going to be enough? I don't remember doing it beyond 3rd grade when I was in school. I figure they will be getting the practice they need after that anyway when they are doing assignments.

I'm with you. Dd has now completed three handwriting books, including cursive, and I wasn't planning on doing any more. I am on the lookout for any major lapses and I do point those out when I see them, but really, IMO they get all the practice they need in everyday life.
