i thought it would be fun to do something a bit out of the box. I was thinking everyone could wear fun and friendly costumes since the party is on oct 2nd but i dont want to do a full on halloween theme. so for plates, decor, the cake what do you guys think? i feel like everyone does princess...not really feeling that and not to keen on doing specific characters (aka dora or something). its not like DD has any interests except the boob lol so just looking for fun ideas. TY ladies and gents

how old will she be?

How old will she be turning? I'm thinking 1, judging from the "09" in your username?

I read the cutest idea for a Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday, which I think I'll steal for my DD's next one. It'd be fun and easy to do a caterpillar cake, and you could serve foods that go with the foods from that story (fruits, salami, cheese, etc. -- maybe some sort of salad to represent the leaf).

You could make little antennae headbands for all the guests, get green and flowered paper goods, make all sorts of bug decorations -- it'd be really cute!

I just saw bug party pictures on FB. The kids were 2-3 years old and they each had bug wings- (butterflies, lady bugs and bumble bees). It was really cute. I think having costumes is a bit much for guests that close to Halloween.

Are you planning a big party? I might find something she always notices and make that the theme. So does she like the moon, cats, certain book that excites her or a toy she really loves? When DS was about 10-11 months he loved the moon and pretty much the only word he said was cat- everything was called CAT! We didn't plan a party for him that year due to his foster care status and he was supposed to be on a visit with his birth parents that day- but had I planned one, I am sure it would have been based on cats.

shes turning one lol cant believe i forgot that haha. i thought because it was close to halloween it would be cute b/c then the kids could wear their costumes twice. it wont be big maybe 10-15people, costumes are optional. idk i thought it would be cute...bad idea?
i dont think bugs would be great...thanks for the ideas though.
she doesnt seem particularly attracted to anything except me and her dad...and our dog she loves him but idk about a dog party...idk shes into everything and anything not like a particular thing. shes very observive though. she will watch you do something from start to finish. it freaks some people out b/c shes so little but w/e shes a genius lol

Costumes would be fun- but also remember that many people (at least me!!) don't have costumes ready till closer to the end of the month.

I think at 1 year, the party is really for the parents so do what you like. She won't care one way or the other- you know Also, give it another month or so, she might start to show more preference for things!

Anyway, for the costume party, I would just pick some colors and roll with it. I like the idea of reds, yellows and oranges- kind of autumn colors.

I found the cutest wrapping paper, and so our 1 year theme was "polka dots". It was awesome. I was SO glad not to have to do princesses or characters, etc. I took some of the wrap paper to the bakery and the matching cake looked just amazing too!

I found a tablecloth and plates with polka dots too, not matching, but at least had pink in it.

ETA ...you could announce the theme and ask guests to wear polka dots if they wanted to too! I would be stressed about having to deal with finding a suitable halloween costume a month early, personally.

I'm doing this for my son's first birthday in two weeks. It's such a great theme idea and you can put it together very inexpensively

I'm making all the decorations, favors and invitations. Here's my gallery on flickr: CLICK

My DS's first birthday party was a puppy party, and it was really cute! Here's a picture of the cake (so easy, just made from 4 rounds).

It's a straw wreath (you can find them at any JoAnn Fabrics in the floral section.) I find the straw to be much more sturdy than the foam. I left the plastic on it so that straw didn't get everywhere. The balloons are pinned to it with greening pins (also found at JoAnns.)

Wow that cake is awesome! I'm totally bookmarking your cake. How did you get the ears so perfect?

Sheer luck. I just drew a sort of yin/yang-style wavy line on the cake round with a knife and it worked out somehow.
