Crawling/sitting in sleep

In the past week, my 6.5 month old son has started sitting himself up and crawling! The good news is that we changed our sleeping arrangement to a side-carred crib just in time to keep him contained. The bad news is that he wakes himself up several times a night by rolling onto his hands and knees and banging his head against the crib bars, or by flinging himself into a seated position from a dead sleep. I have read that it is normal for babies to wake up more often when they are going through a developmental milestone as they "practice" their new skills. I guess my question is how long can I expect this to last?

The reason I ask is that he wakes up a lot more often now and gets himself worked up so he is more difficult to get back to sleep and his crying wakes my DH. We are trying to do the NCSS, but this new development has completely derailed us.

Oh wow i forgot about how my LO was doing this too, probably because it was so short-lived for us. Maybe a couple of weeks? It stopped once cruising was established.

Seriously, I hear ya. Our sons are exactly the same age (born the same day ) and my son is doing the same thing. It's frustrating because when I try to get him to go to sleep he keeps crawling around his crib, trying to sit up, and hitting his head accidentally on the crib rails which then makes him cry.....Getting him to bed is a process. In the end we give up and he comes to bed with us. Of course this doesn't work for naps as our bed is not a safe place for a crawling baby. But that's another thread.
I'm curious to read other posts on this.

Well, it sounds encouraging that it won't last very long. If I can get him to master crawling during the day, maybe he can get it out of his system before bedtime!
