Birth Announcements

I was thinking about birth announcements. Do people still do them? Who do you send them to? Friends? Family? One to keep? How many? Formal ones, electronic ones?

Also, what publications do you announce the birth to? I figure all alumni pubs. Anything else? Do newspapers publish them anymore? I haven't read a real (not online) paper in a long, long time.

What am I forgetting?

We sent out an email with some details and a short birth story with 10 pics or so to our closest friends and family asap...the first week sometime. We'll send a one month email update when we announce her name. That email will go to a wider group of friends and family.

Last time around we printed formal announcements from an online company, tinyprints. We printed 50 and sent them to friends/family and kept a couple for ourselves. Will do the same this time too.

I personally never notified my alumni association, or printed in any newspapers or anything else.

Most of our friends have sent a (physical) photo birth announcement, some as simple as a quick trip to your local photoshop works fine.

Enjoy!!

We are doing birth announcements. With Ds I designed my own and printed them as 4 x 6 matte photos. We will do the same this time. We are sending them to some friends and family, not tons of people though. Some people we will just email a photo with the name and stats and stuff.

As for publications, there are usually birth announcements in your local paper. I mean the kind that are free that are delivered to just your area. I'm not sure what they are called, community papers maybe? Also, any newsletters you might subscribe to might have birth announcements.

I did handmade ones with my first three- a picture glued onto a piece of paper painted or decorated somehow, with the baby's name and stats. Last time I just did a shutterfly photocard announcement and I was bummed about how it came out. So this time I'm back to handmade. I took the last page of a favorite children's book (Children of the Forest by Else Beskow), which has a picture of parents with four kids and their new baby, copied it, whited out the words and will put in our baby's name and stats there, then print four to a page on nice paper. We're sending out about 60 and will include a picture in the envelope. I've already addressed all of them.
