Thunder comfort?

How do you help your child weather (pun intended!) thunderstorms? We seem to be having a lot this year and while DS isn't TOO bad with them I was wondering how you help your child to adjust to them?

At the moment DS gets very clingy and repeats "Mama's here" like some kind of mantra. I once used the phrase "There's nothing to be scared of" but realized VERY quickly that was the wrong choice of words when the only part that seemed to stick was "scared"! I grew up loving to watch thunderstorms off our porch, and would love to do the same, but we don't have anywhere equivalent in our house to do so.

Monkeys are a pretty popular animal in this house, so when the kids were little and got nervous during a thunderstorm, we told them that the Sky Monkeys were dancing. This has evolved into a whole series of adventure stories about the overly curious Sky Monkeys.

I LOVE this idea earthmama! It quite literally made me laugh out loud because we often refer to DS as a monkey and I think Sky Monkeys would really capture his imagination!
