Mama I want to learn the letters

now what? I have it in my head to make a wire to hang on the wall with the letters on it where we can hang pictures we find of things that start with the letter below them. But that's a big project (for me). What are some low key ways to learn letters, we're not rushing and I don't want to turn him off from learning things because he feels like I'm taking over.

How about starting with the ones in his name?

I'm not clear on whether you want to work on identifying letters ("that's a P") or learning some basic phonics ("Pizza starts with P"? Does he know that alphabet? That might be a place to start... oh, and there's a great computer software program called A to Zap (Sunburst) that does both letter idetification and phonics, but it's really fun, too... We got it free with a new computer Rain was 6 or so and we both played around with it because it cracked us up...

He wants to know what the symbols are and what words have them. He's a science kid so I think he looks at it as just more facts to learn and understand.

We didn't actively work at learning letters, but we did have a bunch of books that were alphabet related (Chicka-chicka boom boom) and the like. Then we'd make a game out of guessing what letters thing started with. It helped make errands, like trips to the grocery store, more fun. It came pretty effortlessly.

Leap Frog has a great DVD called "Letter Factory". It teaches both the letters and their sounds. My son got entranced with it when he was about 2 1/2. He watched several times a day for about a week. Next thing I knew he was pointing to letters and saying things like "D says duh". I know other families have had great success with it too.

Another vote for the Letter Factory DVD. I'm not usually a big fan of videos for little ones, but this DVD teaches the letters and sounds fast and in a way that really sticks.

Going to see if the library has the dvd. He already knows the alphabet song he just wants to know what all that stuff on the page and signs is. Thanks for the ideas!

A game that we play for letter recognition is find the letter. While I am making breakfast, I get out the morning paper and give a section to each boy. I give them a letter for the day, and draw it on the board. They go through the paper and try to circle as many of that day's letter as possible. Then, while they are eating, I read the words with the circled letters. When reading, I emphasize the sound of the letter they circled. Great for letter recognition, vocabulary, reading, etc. We keep a dictionary on hand for new words. We end up reading some of the articles, which also sparks conversations about science, math, art, social studies, etc.
