inherited amazing cast irons from chain smoking great grandmother wwyd?

my husbands grandmother past away last year and I recently inherited a few cast iron pans. They are amazing! So well taken care of and have years of grease on t hem

His grandparents where far from health conscious people ate fried crap all the time lots of bacon and lard fried in those pans and they are very well seasoned..

They also chain smoked, in doors, on oxygen. Somehow lived into there 80's probably their stress free lifestyle and personalities. They were both amazing people married 60 years! Im not trying to bad mouth them and of course t hey were sold smoking ages ago when it was "safe" but

The pans do kind of smell when cooked in... I've reheated in them a few times and they have a sort of old smoke smell

I dont really want to scare and re season since the seasoning is so perfect. They feel like glass. I just started cooking in cast iron recently and have a lodge skillet but these ones are amazing compared to the one i just got seasoning wise

so what do i do? Will the cast iron hold the smoke forever? Is it being released into our food? cast iron is porous right? when not seasoned and if the seasoning is all mixed with smoke and stuff is there a way to get it out?

dishwasher + re-season

Yeah if they smell/taste like smoke and you don't like that your only real recourse is to scrape all the old seasoning off and reseason. Sucks.

I agree w/ PPs -- reseason. The good news is, those pans are probably so old that even newly-seasoned they will be better than your new pans!
