Seeking like-minded pediatrician in Kansas City, MO area

Hi all! I'm wondering if any of you out there might be able to point me towards a pediatrician in the Kansas City, MO area (or Overland Park, KS area) that is open-minded towards delayed (or no) vaccinations and things like not circumcising.

I just had a hair-raising experience with my son where some ill-informed doctor tried to get me to schedule my almost one-year-old son for circumcision "because it's just not clean otherwise" and I've just about had it with uninformed people in the backwater.

ps. I brought him in as a potential new patient for an ear check only. I got instead offers of what I consider to be genital mutilation and horror stories about how my son is going to die of hepatitis B because I'm some kind of moron. There was only silence in return when I asked how he was going to catch it in the first place. We sort of knew this wasn't going to be an easy move into non-progressive country but wowsers! Ugly times down here!

Thanks all!

I would recommend a family doctor named John Greenwood in Overland Park. I don't know what part of town you live in, but I've also heard good things about Dr. Killen in Brookside.

We see and love Dr. Douglas Brooks at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park (119th street). He only gave his own children 2 vaccines and is intact-friendly.

I second Dr Brooks, he's fantastic. I've heard good things about Dr Greenwood also.

Oh yes- Dr. Brooks is a great doctor as well. Unfortunately I heard that he currently is not accepting new patients, but that could change. It is worth a call.

Thank you all so very much!

It's true-I called Dr. Brookes' office and he is not taking new patients BUT Dr. Greenwood is

Lee's Summit

I may have to try Dr. Greenwood, too, but I would really like to find someone close to me in Lee's Summit. When a child's sick, it's so hard to ferry them across this city. Any experiences on the east side of KC? We're sort of with Lee's Summit Physician's Group, but I don't like it at all. I have to say they have never pushed me on the vaccines--yet. But I don't take my kids there much. We also go to the new Urgent Care and have had some good results there. I just wish I could find a doctor I could really develop a working relationship with, you know? And a dentist!

Lighthouse has come up a couple of times recently-- must be good! I'll have to check them out. Their website didn't really give much info when I looked at it before, but I'll see if they take my insurance. Thanks!

megwyn_s, have you had a chance to meet Dr.Greenwood? I am also looking for a no vax or delayed vax friendly dr as we had an awful experience at the 2 mo check up when I refused vax's. Similar to your experience, the doc was dumbfounded when I presented my research to him and only replied with " it is just bad medicine not to vaccinate."

We go to Dr Eileen Vu at Pediatric Associates in Lees Summit.. they also have a facility on the plaza. She has been great about cosleeping, extended BF and holistic methods for curing GI ills, etc. I am antibiotic-shy and she has worked with me on that. She also uses quite a bit of eastern medicine for her girls and herself so I think she would be very open to any discussions.

Thank you, Ursomajor! I'll check into her this week. We had a week of doctors for my daughter and I'm SO ready to change offices.

I second ursomajor's recommendation. I've seen Dr. Vu a few times, as well as Dr. Sara Myers there at that office. I've decided to do vacinations, so I can't speak of that, but my son is "intact" and they both support it/think it's normal/etc. They both are also very patient, and I've never felt like the appointments were rushed, they sit and talk with you until all you questions are answered! I really like both of those doctors, and, since my son is only 12 weeks old still, I've had a hard time choosing which doctor I like best! The nurses are great, too, and the office is always clean.

pediatric dds

The only office in town is Jenkins & LeBlanc. It is a relatively long drive, but you don't go very often and well worth the trip. I love, love, love Jill Jenkins! My daughter has special needs baby teeth. Jill is the only one I could find in the metro area who could handle it appropriately.
Do NOT go to the ped dds off of 291 with the dinosaur! They are liars and con artists who deserve to be shut down.

I didn't see Dr. Vu on the Pediatric Associates website...maybe I'll call.

Pediatric Professionals, by Lees Summit North HS--I've taken my son to Dr. Phillips...who is mostly or halfway vaccine delayed friendly. However, I've been getting a lot of weird advice from her about stopping breastfeeding after a year and how I should let my son cry it out at night and no longer feed him in the middle of the night. She actually is halfway supporting my son's father (who I've told her physically abused me) and he is trying to get me to stop breast feeding. This is why I am looking for a more breast feeding friendly pediatrician.

I'm in the LS area as well and we see Dr Killen.  We saw Greenwood once and he was great, but just way too far of a drive.

For urgent care we've gone to the Emergent Care off of 291 north near Lakewood - both of the docs we've seen there have been great as well.  We're a no-vax, intact, toddler-nursing family. :)

Just as an update on the dentist... I finally went to Lighthouse Dentistry (holistic/biodentistry) with Dr. Ferguson. I haven't taken my kids yet, but I was very impressed with their philosophies! Everything was right up my alley-- nutritional emphasis (has studied Weston A Price among others,) talks about the relationship of the teeth to the body and organs, no BPA in sealants (and sealants aren't recommended for all kids,) no standard fluoride treatment... They seem to do all the standard dentistry things (ie: cosmetic, anesthetics --including sedation when needed.)

I was impressed by the front office staff, the office manager, Dr. Ferguson and the dental hygienist (who is a nutritionist, educator, author and speaker according to their pamphlet.) I didn't meet the other dentist, Dr. Molly Hodges, and I only had an exam--no cleaning or work done yet.

Anyway, hope that helps. Their website doesn't have much info-- I think they are not wanting to draw too much attention to themselves, though I crave the education online. They gave me a ton of stuff to research, thank goodness.

UPDATE: Dr Vu left Pediatric Assoc and headed back to an office on the KS side... we were super sad and unhappy with Dr Casper that we were seeing for recurrent ear infections.. we have since moved to LS Physicians and are seeing Dr Trites... haven' t had a ton of interaction yet but have been happy with what we have had... 2nd baby is on the way so will be interested in how that goes...GL

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but by any chance does anyone have any updates on doctors on the Missouri side that are no vaccination and uncircumcised friendly? Preferably someone who doesn't turn to medication as a first answer to everything. I  need to find someone that will accept Children's Mercy Family Health Partners. I have had the worst time trying to find someone and my son just turned one.
