FCLO and toddlers

I think my DS (age 2) has a cavity. I'm trying my best not to feel like a failure of a mom and figure out what we can do about it. I'm 99% sure that it is nutritional (we have multiple food allergies, heavy metal issues, and some deficiencies) and so I'm going to find my copy of Nutrition and Physical Degeneration and do what Dr. Price did, as best as we can with our allergies. I know we're going to have to start CLO.

So I've got a bottle of Green Pastures in the fridge. I take it on and off. It is... strong stuff :Puke ... to put it mildly. I have NO IDEA how to get this in my fairly picky kid. Heck, I don't even know the proper dosage for a 22lb little guy. How much FCLO do you give your toddlers? How do you get it in them? Do you hide it or chase it? With what?

not like this is really going to help you too much- but

I would not give $$ & yucky tasting FCLO to a toddler.

We started at 6 months with just a "dot" of Nordic Naturals (lemon) and worked up the dose over time.
We take it together- at the end of the dinner meal- seeing that everyone gets it and it's YUMMY (really we DO like the taste).

I would hate to throw away money giving YUNKY stuff just to have it spit out but a picky eater.

IF you want to stick with FCLO- I would give a cheaper (like what we use) comes in several flavors and get use to the taste, so to say, and than move on if you can get down.

My dd will take FCLO a few times a week. I squirt it into her mouth with the syringe that comes with the bottle and she chases it with water. The syringe helps a lot to bypass the taste buds. I also like to take it after toothbrushing before I rinse my mouth, while the toothpaste flavor is still really strong.

Here are the WAP recommendations on dosage for FCLO

the dosage for the high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil is provided as follows:
  • Children age 3 months to 12 years: 1/2 teaspoon or 2.5 mL, providing 4650 IU vitamin A and 975 IU vitamin D.
  • Children over 12 years and adults: 1 teaspoon or 10 capsules, providing 9500 IU vitamin A and 1950 IU vitamin D.
  • Pregnant and nursing women: 2 teaspoons or 20 capsules, providing 19,000 IU vitamin A and 3900 IU vitamin D.
Please note that the fermented cod liver oil contains many co-factors that may enhance the body's uptake and usage of vitamins A and D; in fact, many have reported results equivalent to those obtained from high-vitamin cod liver oil with half the recommended dose, that is ¼ teaspoon or 1.25 mL for children age 3 months to 12 years; ½ teaspoon or 5 capsules for children over 12 years and adults; and 1 teaspoon or 10 capsules for pregnant and nursing women.

Thanks for the dosage recs. We'll probably start him on 1/4 tsp or less. Poor kiddo seems to react to nearly everything, so we'll take it slow.

We'll definitely start taking it as a family... if I can get DH to choke it down without a face, we might be able to convince DS to take it. Unfortunately, DS cannot take any of the flavored kinds. At least all of the ones I looked at have ingredients that he'll react to... so its the FCLO or nothing. Maybe I can offer a bit of fruit right afterwards or something else that'll help with the flavor.

I give it to my DD on a small amount of really strongly flavoured juice - there's a blueberry-acai-grape juice I get that masks the flavour pretty well, and I bribe her with a teaspoon of honey she can eat after. Then she usually wants some cheese. That works pretty well for me, too Due to childhood trauma I have a pretty nasty gag-reflex that activates from the taste of CLO, but this method works for me.
