I'm wanting to have a water birth with my baby. And I'm starting to look at options.. my bath tub really isn't one of them.... it's quite small and shallow but it it absoultely has to be done it can be...

I have been looking at rentals but to get one i'm almost looking a the cost of a tub... so then i was wondering about the other kinda kiddie type pools...

anyone have any experince out there.. Or if you in the Vancouver Bc region do you have one I can borrow?

We rented an Aqua Doula from a MW in our town. It was fabulous because it was large, deep, and also heated. It cost us around $150 or so to rent it, but I think that they cost around $1000 if you buy it new.

We are expecting #2 in Nov. and we plan to use the same one again.

We used the bigger fishy pool and loved it.

You could also use a Rubbermaid cattle trough, bought from a farm supply store. If you didn't need it after the birth, you could sell it on Craigslist, or maybe to a local midwife?

Another enthusiastic vote for the fishy pool!

I rented a tub. Our baby is due any day now so haven't used it for birth yet, but I did fill it and get in it already. I like it because it is deep and it is heated. I've seen a lot of water birth videos on YouTube where they use some type of blow up tub and they just look really shallow for my liking. Sometimes the baby isn't even submerged fully when born which I think is kind of dangerous. I just watched one today where the Mom was on hands and knees and the water only covered part of her arms and legs - baby was born totally above water. I would be much more annoyed than comforted by a tub that shallow, but if you are a really small person it might work better for you.

The fishy pool was perfect for me, too!

My mw and I recently had a talk about which of the 3 most popular I might prefer....as she has all 3 for rental. The option of fishy pool, La Bassine or Birth Pool in a Box. Her desire is to oneday purchase an Aqua Doula for rental but right now she hasn't gotten that far yet. Her advice was for the taller moms to use the Birth Pool in a Box....as it is deeper than the La Bassine, and the fishy pool proves to be only deep enough to comfortably sit in and be submersed but not really give you the option of laboring on your knees and having your belly covered. Due to the fact I am 5'7 she recommended I use the Birth Pool in a Box over the La Bassine. Her opinon is that La Bassine or fishy pool can comfortably accomodate women around 5'4 or so. So, we're going with the Birth Pool in a Box. It's our goal to eventually buy one since we know we'll probably use it again but for now we're just going to rent her's for the birth of these babies. According to her though, unless you want to labor in a sitting position the entire time in order to have your belly covered you need to choose based on height with around 5'4 being the deciding point on which way to go. Possible fishy pool or La Bassine for 5'4 or under, anything above Birth Pool in a Box or Aqua Doula. I usually do hard labor and push on hands and knees so depth was imperative to me.

I'm 5'5" and had tons of room in the fishy pool (there are two different ones- I used the larger)

On hands and knees by belly was TOTALLY covered.

LOVE the fishy pool--nice soft, supportive sides.

I have the Birth Pool in a Box and *love* it. I bought it for my 3rd birth, let 4 friends borrow it, and will use it again in November. Great investment, and a huge difference for me over the fishy pool I used the first time. Love the BPIAB!
