Probiotics and Eczema - need some advice

I've recently been looking into probiotics to see if it can help ds2 expand his diet without having another flare-up. Probiotics are totally new to me - I just keep hearing about people who have included probiotics in their treatment plans be it for allergies, ibs, or gut healing etc.

So with my limited knowledge I impulsively purchased Culturelle probiotics. Ds2's latest flare-up was just going down when we started on it. After 2 days he had a really intense flare-up - his foot, bum, behind his knee, even a tiny patch on the inside of his elbow came up again and that is usually the last patch to come up (ie things are truly bad by the time that patch shows up).

I caved in and put some Elomet on his bum which looked really bad and knees in the middle of the night, as well as did the whole wash with antiseptic solution, vacuum with HEPA vacuum-cleaner. Another day passed with his patches still looking red and very rashy, but I didn't have to put anymore Elomet, just clean with antiseptic and put some moisturisers on the areas that have formed scabs to reduce the itch.

We have stuck to a pretty strict diet that gave good results in the past 6 weeks, so I was feeling very disheartened. Then I realised I just started giving him the probiotics, my mum made the same connection separately and rang me up to remind me. Last night he was sleeping much better though.

My questions: - could it be the probiotics (i've been lazy with the vacuuming lately, but he had improved even without the vacuuming before)? Is it what they call a healing crisis or just a plain bad reaction (i know i know, that's a million dollar question!!)? Should I continue with the probiotics? Cut the dosage by half? Change the probiotics to another strain/brand?

Thank you. I'm so clueless.

Culturelle has a couple different kinds... is the one with dairy? which is grown on whey.

I don't know what the growth media is for the dairy free version.

How old is he?

Oops, sorry forgot to say I would stop the Culturelle and then see if things improve.

It's the dairy and gluten free version. He just turned 3 - today!

Stopping and observing - I know, it sounds like the sensible thing to do. Then I wonder about all that healing crisis stuff - argh. I told him at this rate, he would have to have a baked potato with a candle stuck into it for his birthday. sigh.

My DS has bouts with eczema too (salicylate intolerance). Once we got him on the right probiotics, the healing crisis was very mild and only a few days. Basically just involved a big clean out: a lot of pooping and some digestive discomfort but gradually less stinky poop as the proboitics started doing their thing. It don't recall him getting big skin flares.

I've been trying to google what the growth media is for that gfcf Culturelle and cannot find out. If it contains soy or another aggravating food in it, that could be the issue and not the probiotic causing die off and gut flora shift per se.

OH... that version contains FOS from chicory too right? prebiotics can cause a lot of upset in people with bacterial imbalance in their gut flora. Prebiotics are indigestible sugars, can cause gas and bloating. Supposedly they feed only the good bacteria in the gut b/c humans cannot digest them. However, there are some bad bacteria, such as klebsiella I think, which *do* feed off of them.

Can eczema be a yeast problem?

JaneS,
Thank you so much for your responses!

Culturelle got back to me. Their growth culture for the dairy free/gluten free probiotics is pork muscle. This is supposed to be 100% removed in the final product.

I'm now wondering if there could be an yeast connection, instead of a probiotics connection?? Is it possible for eczema to be linked to yeast overgrowth? Other than the probiotics, he has been having a lot more bananas, fruits and baked products (homemade from scratch but with honey) before his latest flare-up. He's also having more garlic and onions but the yeast connection seem to make more sense. I myself have a yeast problem and when I was pregnant, I was very weak and it totally flared up and I've not truly shaken it off till this day. DS2 was borned with 2 rings of broken skin around his ankles, and to this day, his ankles are the places that flare up first, and subside last.

Is this possible? I realised that the diet he did well on (FAILSAFE minus top8 plus corn and seeds) can also be an anti-yeast diet, Or am I chasing my own tail?

There is inulin in the culturelle, which is derived from chicory root - a high salicylates food. If he did well on failsafe, I'd say it's a decent chance he's reacting to the inulin (and will likely react to FOS that is the inulin sub in most probiotics).

Try an inulin/fos free probiotic, we use the ones from customprobiotics.com
