Vitamin C Dose?

My two kids just started with a cold and it's rapidly moved to their lungs. They both had RSV as infants and have flare ups with breathing/respiratory issues when they get sick. It's been awhile so it's probably due time we get something . . .

They're both taking Xopenex/Pulmicort (and running like mad children), fish oil, multivitamin, Vit. D, probiotics, Vit. C and we're trying to get in plenty of green veggies, liquids, whole foods etc.

I'm wondering about boosting their Vit. C. Dh and I do this whenever something comes on but I'm not sure w/ them how much would be a proper amount. The breathing treatments are AWFUL and make them so, so hyper I'd love to do anything to help get this cold/sickness on the way out of our house.

Thanks for your help.

sorry, edited to add their ages: They're 2 and 5. We also have a new baby in the house, I'm boosting my Vit C and eating as well as possible, but is there anything I can take/do to keep the baby healthy?

The general guideline I've read for vit C dosing when sick is 250 mg per kilogram of body weight, which is 1.1 grams per 10 lbs of body weight for those who don't think in metric. Like me.

That said--my kids, esp my son, needed a heckuva lot more than this, so I'd use that amount as a starting dose (spread throughout the day, at least 3 doses, 4 or more is good) and then go up. Diarrhea, digestive upset, those are signs that it's too much and you back off just a bit til you don't get that.

When my son was exclusively nursing, I could take lots of vitC and it reduced the severity of his colds. Once he started solids, I found that I needed to give vitC directly to him to get the same effect.
