help with toothpaste

we have been pretty reaction free for, hmmm, maybe two months or so? things have been going really well and i was feeling relieved.
then, this week, dd started acting like a maniac (and i'm 37 weeks pregnant) so i am totally exhausted and weepy now. exactly how i want to go into birth and my postpartum time with my newborn. plus, i know i don't have to explain to you ladies how incredibly emotionally stressful reactions are for me.

so, dd reacts to dairy, gluten, beef, soy, corn, strawberries, tomatoes, peas, beans( we don't do any) and potatoes are a once in a while thing. the only thing that i feel was introduced this week was toothpaste! i know i've read some kids that react to sals react to toothpaste but she's fine with sals. and obviously, since it's just a tiny bit in her mouth that i know she's not swallowing, it's just a behavioral reaction that we're seeing. no excema, poop is fine and she's sleeping pretty well still. however, i feel like i'm familiar enough at this point with these behavioral things to recognize them. it's the only time i ever get to feeling really snappy and weepy and overwhelmed and like i really need a break from her. otherwise, she's an absolute joy to be around and easy to be around.

ok, so i was hoping that if i listed the ingredients, someone might notice something that would trigger this. thanks for trying.

it's nature's gate creme de peppermint natural toothpaste. the ingredients are as follows:
calcium carbonate, glycerin, water, chondrus crispus (carrageenan), mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, sodium bicarbonate, calcium ascorbate, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract, daucus carota sativa (carrot) seed oil, calcium glycerophospate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium chloride, flavor.

anyone have any rec's for a better toothpaste if you or your dc react to the same things as my dd?

My DH gets terrible headaches with peppermint. Doesn't seem to bother my allergic DD, but just a thought. We use Tom's of Maine but that is out for you do to the strawberry.

What are the ingredients in that that she hasn't had before? For instance, my DD2 would react to the carageenan, but my DS would react to the carrot.

Not sure, but someone in the Neocate thread mentioned that iodized salt has corn in it. Maybe the sodium chloride they use has corn in it. I hope you manage to figure it out.

One other product to look into is a tooth powder instead of a tooth paste. Should be fewer ingredients, but then again, maybe one or more is still problematic for you.

We use this brand, they have several flavors. The kids thought the mint was a bit too strong but we all enjoy the cinnamon. I've read the lemon-lime is good but I haven't tried it.

It's cheaper to buy from places like vitacost.com; sometimes Whole Foods carries it to try one bottle.

I have worked for a holistic dentist for over 10 years now and work with folks that are incredibly chemically sensitive. A ton of folks have issues with peppermint, glycerin, carrageenan, fluoride and really all the other junk in most "natural" toothpastes.

My doc recommends the following, doesn't really taste great, but gets the job done without issues!!

If this link doesn't take you to "tooth powder, you can search easily on their website.

Weleda brand makes a few toothpastes that are good for some, I can't use them, but DP has no issues.

Good luck!!

Glycerin can be corn (or sometimes beef, I think). Peppermint can cause issues for people for reasons other than sals - it could be a straight peppermint reaction (or any other ingredient in there). Also, I'd guess things like the peppermint could absorb through the skin in her mouth to her bloodstream (lots of sublinguals are peppermint flavored) - so even if she isn't swallowing, she's being exposed).

First thing I'd do is stop the toothpaste for a few days, make sure it's the culprit.

thanks for the responses! i did stop the toothpaste and she seemed a lot better today. so the glycerin would be a problem if it were corn or beef. i was also wondering about the peppermint but i feel like she had a huge cup of peppermint tea a month ago and was fine with it.
the biggest thing i'm wondering is, if it is the toothpaste, then what the heck am i supposed to brush her teeth with? i'll look into those tooth powders.
