ADHD, Impulse Control, and Discipline - Page 2

My 4.5 year old has a very high energy temperament but isn't ADHD. She has difficulty picking up her stuff but can do other chores. Anytime she starts picking up toys she ends up playing instead, but she can dust, pick up the living room, unload grocery bags, water our plants outside. I think not being able to pick up toys well is normal 4 year old behavior.

It really shows alot of motivation on your DDs part that she was able to get the rest of the mess under control. You should be proud of her and yourself. You did ask for discipline ideas. So one thing I've noticed is that when my DD has messy activities during a day she makes less chaotic messes with other stuff. It seems like some kids need some chaos. So painting, cutting and using glider glue pens, fingerpainting the fiberglass wall surrounding the bath/shower, playing in water in the sink all seem to satisfy her need for messiness.

Thanks ssh. I am definitely proud of dd. I appreciate the suggestions for messy activities. It's been a few days and I can't remember what else we did that day other than go to the park, so yeah, maybe she was needing to get messy.

My dd is 8 now and has had many of these similiar behaviors and was diagnosed with nonverbal learning disorder when she was 5 years. She also has the developmental delays and the issues with not learning from experiences and not picturing outcomes. Everything is step by step and but she is so smart and verbal... and is always messy and she doesn't care if shes so dirty, has poop all over herself or anything like that.. which is a daily thing. Not saying this is true for yours but something you may want to look into.
